Patriots' Brady reports to training camp
Despite various rumors about whether Tom Brady would show up when veterans are required to report to the team on Wednesday, a source told FOXSports.com that the star signal caller reported to the New England Patriots on Sunday. The quarterbacks were required to report with the rookies on Sunday.
ON THE MEND
Brady, who is heading into the final year of his contract, carries a base salary of $3.5 million for this season. He was paid a $3 million roster bonus earlier this year.
New England had three second-round picks in this year’s draft. Two of them signed on Sunday, the team announced. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but sources said both players signed four-year deals.
TE Rob Gronkowski (6-6, 265, Arizona), selected 10th overall in the round, missed the entire 2009 season because of a back injury. He also did not work out during February’s NFL Combine, but had good private workouts prior to the draft.
New England decided against re-signing veteran TE Ben Watson, who signed with the Cleveland Browns in March. Watson’s void left the team with little athleticism at the position. With Gronkowski and third-round pick Aaron Hernandez added to the mix, New England is now in good shape at the position for years to come. And both can be brought along slowly since veteran TE Alge Crumpler was also added to the roster earlier this year.
OLB Jermaine Cunningham (6-3, 260, Florida), selected 21st in the round, will be expected to contribute right away. The team decided to release veteran OLB Adalius Thomas, leaving the team with little depth at the position. They did re-sign veteran OLB Derrick Burgess, but New England needs to get a younger player into the rotation.
Two players remain unsigned from New England’s draft class: First-round pick CB Devin McCourty and second-round pick LB Brandon Spikes.
FOXSports.com’s Jay Glazer reports St Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo and general manager Billy Devaney will meet on Monday to decide the team's plan regarding free-agent WR Terrell Owens.
According to Glazer, the team has thought “casually” about Owens for months, but there’s a lot to get through in order to sign the veteran wide-out. The question of money and whether Owens actually wants to sign with the Rams remain issues.
Though St. Louis has an impressive roster of young receivers, it lacks any veteran presence at the position.
FOX SPORTS POLL
Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and Spagnuolo know Owens from their days with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Baltimore Ravens second-round pick OLB Sergio Kindle suffered a head injury in a house he was visiting Thursday night in Austin, Texas. It is believed Kindle fell down two flights of stairs, the team said. Kindle will not report to the team’s training camp facility when the other rookies report on Monday.
“Members of our medical staff, including Bill Tessendorf and Dr. Andy Tucker, have spoken with doctors in Texas. We understand Sergio is stable at this time and that he is being tested and observed,” said executive president and general manager Ozzie Newsome.
Kindle, the first of Baltimore’s two second-round picks, surprisingly fell out of the first round despite a very productive career at the University of Texas. But a low medical grade (knee) made him fall a bit.
The Dallas Cowboys had their first practice of training camp on Sunday, but several players did not participate.
TE Martellus Bennett (left ankle) and rookie S Akwasi-Owusu Ansah (shoulder) were placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury List.
LB Stephen Hodge (knee) and undrafted free agent DE Lorenzo Washington (hamstring) are on the Active/PUP List. All four players count against Dallas’ 80-man roster.
The team also made a few transactions over the weekend. They signed undrafted free agent LB Brandon Sharpe and waived undrafted free agent WR Verran Tucker.
Rookie DL Josh Brent, who suffered a broken left hand, is expected to miss about three days, FOXSports.com’s Alex Marvez said.
The Denver Broncos signed sixth-round pick G/C Eric Olsen (6-3, 305, Notre Dame), the team announced. According to a source, Olsen signed a four-year deal worth roughly $1.9 million with a signing bonus worth $106,000.
The versatile offensive lineman is expected to compete for a job in training camp at guard. Denver is light on depth on their interior of their offensive line, so Olsen has a legitimate shot to make the team.
The Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms on contract with free-agent DT Montavious Stanley, his agent, Ralph Cindrich, said via Twitter. The Philadelphia Eagles were also believed to be one of the other teams to show interest in Stanley.
Stanley, 28, appeared in 15 games last season for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The journeyman defensive lineman was originally selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2006 draft. Since then, he has spent time with the St. Louis Rams, Dallas again, Jacksonville twice, Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints.
Stanley has experience playing in the 3-4 and 4-3 defenses, so he’ll fit in with Miami, which had been looking for depth on its defensive line. The team recently lost starting NT Jason Ferguson to retirement and DE Phillip Merling to an Achilles' tendon injury.
The New York Giants have signed free-agent LB Keith Bulluck, the team announced.
The durable defender had started 127 straight games for the Tennessee Titans dating back to the final game of the 2001 season. However, he suffered a torn ACL during Tennessee’s Dec. 20 game against the Miami Dolphins and missed the final two games of last season.
Bulluck, 33, recently worked out for the Giants and Arizona Cardinals.
While Bulluck played his entire career with Tennessee at weak-side linebacker, he’s expected to move to middle linebacker with the Giants. With New York, he’ll get a chance to compete for a starting job, one that became open after the team released veteran Antonio Pierce back in February. Pierce has since retired.
For many years, Bullock was recognized as one of the top linebackers in the NFL. But at 33 and coming off of a serious knee injury, it remains to be seen how much he has left in the tank.
