Washington Redskins Strategy and Personnel

The Redskins filled Clinton Portis' roster spot by promoting offensive tackle William Robinson from the practice squad. Robinson spent his rookie year of 2008 on Seattle's practice squad.

The Redskins also re-signed fellow running back Anthony Alridge, to their practice squad. Originally claimed off waivers on Feb. 12 from Denver where he spent his rookie year on injured reserve, Alridge ran for 46 yards on 10 carries and had three catches for 34 yards while returning two kickoffs for 34 yards.

The Redskins changed practice squad receivers again, cutting Keith Eloi, whom they had just brought back last week and signing James Robinson, who has spent time on the practice squads of Miami and Cleveland this season.



PLAYER NOTES

--CB DeAngelo Hall didn't practice again on Thursday because of the right knee he sprained on Nov. 22 at Dallas and sidelined him the past two weeks. Hall is also suffering from back spasms.

--FB Mike Sellers won't play after being hospitalized overnight after Sunday's loss to New Orleans with a severe thigh bruise. His thigh is still very swollen.

--DT Albert Haynesworth won't play because of the sprained left ankle he re-injured in the fourth quarter against the Saints.

--OT Stephon Heyer (knee) was limited on Thursday but is expected to start on Sunday.

--DT Cornelius Griffin (knee) was limited on Thursday but is expected to start on Sunday.

--DE Phillip Daniels (knee) was limited on Thursday but is expected to start on Sunday.

GAME PLAN: The Redskins will try to keep on keeping on. Since No. 1 running back Clinton Portis was hurt a month ago, joining fellow left tackle Chris Samuels and tight end Chris Cooley, both fellow Pro Bowl performers, on the shelf, quarterback Jason Campbell has spread the ball around to veterans Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El and youngsters Fred Davis and Devin Thomas while handing off to a backfield by committee, headed by Rock Cartwright. If Raiders ace cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha eliminates Moss, the less proven players will have to come through again. The musical chairs line didn't allow a sack last week and faces a good test at Oakland.

A Washington defense that ranks 10th overall and fourth against the pass would seem to have a big advantage against an Oakland offense that ranks 31st overall and last in passing, but those same Raiders just rallied for three fourth-quarter touchdowns to stun host Pittsburgh, two weeks after shocking AFC North leader Cincinnati when receiver Louis Murphy caught a game-tying touchdown pass in the final minute. The Redskins have allowed 11 plays of at least 35 yards during the past six games after surrendering just one during the first six games. Washington's 24th-ranked run defense was stellar last week against New Orleans. Andre Carter and the pass rush could be in for a big day.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Redskins CB Carlos Rogers vs. Raiders WR Louis Murphy. Rogers, a 5-year veteran, was benched after getting burned by Brandon Marshall on a double move TD in Week 10, but is back in the lineup whether or not ex-Raider DeAngelo Hall returns from a sprained knee this week. Murphy came out of nowhere to help beat the Bengals and Steelers with late TD catches in two of the last three games.

Redskins WR Santana Moss vs., Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha. Although second-year man Devin Thomas is coming off a career game and second-year TE Fred Davis has been Jason Campbell's most productive target of late, veteran Moss remains the Redskins' biggest weapon. So look for the Raiders to assign Asomugha, their Pro Bowl cornerback, to watch him most of the day.

INJURY IMPACT: If FB Mike Sellers (thigh) can't play, reserve TE Todd Yoder would take his reps, leaving the Redskins without a backup at either position.

If CB DeAngelo Hall (knee) can't play for a third straight Sunday, Fred Smoot would start again opposite Carlos Rogers.
