Reports: Alex Smith deal not done yet
The Niners are actively talking to teams and receiving interest in the former No. 1 draft pick, according to both ESPN's Adam Schefter and the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows, but no deal has been agreed upon. The Chiefs are among the teams interested, according to Schefter's league sources.
A trade can't be completed before March 12 after 4 p.m. ET, when the new league year officially begins. Trading Smith would save the Niners $8.5 million in 2013.
Smith, 28, has passed for 14,280 yards with 81 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in 80 games. He passed for 1,737 yards and 13 TDs last season — including going 18-of-19 for 232 yards and three TDs in an Oct. 29 win at Arizona — before being sidelined with a concussion and replaced by Colin Kaepernick, who led the 49ers to the Super Bowl.
