Four-time Pro Bowl LB Porter on IR

Published Dec. 21, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

The career of four-time Pro Bowler Joey Porter is likely over after the Arizona Cardinals placed the outside linebacker on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his season, The Arizona Republic reported.

The 34-year-old started the first six games of the season but missed the last eight with a knee injury that required surgery.

Even if he had recovered from the injury he would not have played because rookie Sam Acho had surpassed him on the depth chart.

Porter had accepted a pay cut from $5.75 million to $1.5 million for this season and this was the last year of his contract.

He had one sack in six games this season, compared with five in 14 last year. If he does not return next year he will finish his career with 98 sacks.

Porter played for the Steelers from 1999 to 2006 — winning a Super Bowl — and the Dolphins from 2007 to 2009, before signing with the Cardinals in 2010 as a free agent.

He was named to the Steelers All-Time Team and the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.
