Bad Beat: Why does Dr. Dre have Seahawks fans steaming mad?
You would think becoming the most famous fan base in American sports — and getting your name printed in the Guinness Book of World Records for loudest crowd noise (twice) — would have you feeling pretty good about yourself. Add to that the fact that you cheer for a team that sure looks ready to make a serious Super Bowl run, and you're probably already making plans for the parade. And when your fame crosses over into music (Dr. Dre of all people!) . . . well, now you're just livin' the dream, right?
Apparently not in Seattle. Looks like the new Beats by Dre ad has the "12th Man" feeling pretty sleepless right now — and when you see the commercial, you'll understand why.
You can view the ad here.
The reasons we can't show the ad in this space are the same reasons why you would think the fans would be honored — it shows San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick preparing for a game in the most unfriendly of conditions: fans screaming "You suck!" at the team bus, a fan relieving himself on the tires, a young fan flipping Kaepernick the bird . . . a near-riot outside the stadium.
However, the ad also shows the QB responding by throwing a pair of Beats on in the bus, drowning out the crowd as he calmly makes his way through the mob before heading to the locker room to prepare for the game. And though the ad never shows it, it would lead one to believe that Kaepernick goes on to lay a whooping on his opponent and shut the home team up.
Now, the ad never identifies the fans as Seahawks fans, or the site of the game being Seattle. But the fans are sporting Seahawks colors, the Seattle skyline is shown in the background and there is plenty of rain. And to repeat: Seattle is recognized as the toughest crowd on opposing teams league-wide. But with such a negative depiction — and perhaps the fact that the 12th Man isn't getting its due props in the commercial — seems to have Seahawks fans steamed.
Or maybe it's that the guy who was so thoroughly manhandled in Seattle earlier this season is seen as so heroic.

And the debate raged on in the Twittersphere:
If you're a Seahawks fan and you're going to boycott Beats By Dre b/c of that Kaepernick commercial, then plz stop following me. #ridiculous

Wow. I think @beatsbydre sales in Seattle are about to plummet. TOTALLY inaccurate picture of @seahawks fans. http://t.co/Ltbit5TBl8

@mplemmons80 @Volume12Seattle @beatsbydre it's just typical "media slighted us cuz were Seattle and everyone hates us" thinking.

@1077TheEnd definitely! And I seem to recall they lost in Seattle, so looks like his Beats by Dre didn't work too well... #GoHawks

And as that last tweet goes, here are Kaepernick's career numbers at CenturyLink Field:
32-64, 371 yards, 1 TD, 4 INT, 118 yards rushing . . . and more importantly: 0 wins, 2 losses, outscored 71-16.
