Ravens push pay cut on Boldin?

Published Mar. 9, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

A Super Bowl XLVII hero is being asked to take a pay cut to remain with the Baltimore Ravens.

A source told FOXSports.com earlier today that the Ravens want wide receiver Boldin to renegotiate the $6 million base salary he is set to earn in 2013. Otherwise, Boldin will be released before Tuesday’s start of the free-agent signing period.

USA Today Sports is reporting that Boldin has since rejected the proposal to cut his salary and is ready to test free agency if the Ravens release him.

Boldin was one of quarterback Joe Flacco’s favorite targets during the postseason, especially in third-down situations. Boldin caught six passes for 104 yards and one touchdown in Baltimore’s 34-31 championship victory over San Francisco.

Boldin, though, is 32 years old and the Ravens are interested in clearing more salary cap space even after signing quarterback Joe Flacco to a contract extension rather than having to designate him their franchise player. Baltimore wants to re-sign some of its own pending free agents, with linebacker Dannell Ellerbe believed to top the list.

During a February interview with NBC Sports Radio, Boldin said he would retire if released by Baltimore. A source, though, said Boldin is having second thoughts about that statement.

Boldin was acquired in a 2010 trade with Arizona after spending his first seven seasons with the Cardinals. He tallied 65 catches for 921 yards and four touchdowns during the 2012 regular season.
