Costas: Redskins 'an insult, a slur'

NBC commentator Bob Costas made headlines last December when he injected himself into a public debate that transcended sports when he spoke out on the issue of gun control after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed the mother of his child and then himself in front of team personnel. On Sunday night, he did it again.

This time, the issue is much more centralized to sports, but has drawn increasing attention in the mainstream — the use of the name Redskins by Washington's NFL franchise. Last week, a day after the NFL said it would meet with the Oneida Indian Nation to discuss the issue, team owner Dan Snyder strongly implied that the team will not change its name, and that the term Redskins is, "a badge of honor." Even President Obama has weighed in on the topic.

So on Sunday night, with the Redskins playing at Dallas, Costas took his turn, saying among other things:
