Browns release Vince Young 11 days after signing free-agent deal
As promising as draft day is for some rookies, there’s a cruel reality for some veterans.
The Browns announced the release of five veteran players Monday, including quarterback Vince Young. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam announced the move with Young during a speech at a Pro Football Hall of Fame luncheon.
Eleven days after inking a one-year, $730,000 deal in Cleveland, Young is on the outside looking in. The team also announced that YouTube sensation Alex Tanney had been relieved of his duties.
With the Browns spending a first-round pick on Johnny Manziel, it was a long shot for either player to make the roster.
The quarterbacks now on the Browns' roster are Manziel, Brian Hoyer, Tyler Thigpen and Connor Shaw. The latter was signed as an undrafted free agent. Thigpen was signed along with Young on May 1.
Young hasn't played in an NFL regular-season game since 2011. The 30-year-old has a 31-19 career record.
A former Heisman Trophy finalist in, Young spent five seasons with Tennessee. He started three games for the Eagles in 2011. He spent part of the past two preseasons with Buffalo and Green Bay. After a preseason with the Packers in 2013, the 6-foot-5, 232-pound quarterback was released last August.
