Bills sign QB Leinart after workout

Published Aug. 25, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

With EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb injured, and with undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel the only remaining healthy quarterback on the roster, the Buffalo Bills have added a former top-10 pick.

The team signed one-time Arizona Cardinals draft pick Matt Leinart following a workout on Sunday. Leinart beat out former Washington Redskins quarterback John Beck in a workout that was quickly put together following Kolb's head injury on Saturday against the Redskins.

The Bills will be the third team in three years for Leinart, who was with the Houston Texans from 2010-11 and the Oakland Raiders last season. Leinart has made only two starts since the beginning of the 2008 season. He's expected to play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Detroit Lions.

Tuel figures to get the start against Detroit, though the Bills are still hopeful Manuel will be back for the opener against the New England Patriots in two weeks. Manuel is out for the rest of the preseason following a scope on his knee.

The Bills have yet to update Kolb's status since saying on Saturday he was suffering from "concussion-like symptoms." Kolb has had multiple concussions in the past, which makes his latest head injury a troublesome situation.
