Panthers terminate Tucker's contract

Published Jul. 30, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney says defensive end/linebacker Jyles Tucker has left training camp and the team has terminated his contract.

Hurney wouldn't rule out bringing Tucker back at some point.

Hurney says Tucker, who signed a one-year contract this offseason with the Panthers, left camp so he could focus on gaining weight. Tucker reported to training camp weighing less than 230 pounds and wants to be significantly heavier.

He's listed as 255 pounds in the team's media guide.

The 28-year-old Tucker played four seasons in San Diego, two of those under former Chargers defensive coordinator and current Panthers coach Ron Rivera. During that span he had 55 tackles and 10 sacks. He did not play last season.
