Who could replace Weis in Kansas City?

Published Jan. 1, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

According to the Sporting News, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis will be named the offensive coordinator at the University of Florida on Monday.

The report does not state whether Weis will remain with the Chiefs through the NFL playoffs which begin next weekend.

The move back to the collegiate ranks for Weis is surprising since it would be assumed to be a step down for the veteran coach.

Weis was named offensive coordinator of the Chiefs in January of last year less than two months after he was fired as the head coach at the University of Notre Dame after five seasons.

It has been speculated that the Chiefs could look to hire former Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels, but McDaniels and Chiefs head coach Todd Haley had a blowup during a postgame handshake earlier this season. However, since Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli and McDaniels have known each other for several years, it's possible that Haley considers talkng to McDaniels about the soon-to-be vacated job opening.

A personnel source told FOXSports.com that a name to keep an eye on is Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, if the Browns decide to fire the coaching staff after their season is over. Daboll is fully versed in the offensive scheme which the Chiefs ran this season under Weis. Daboll served as the wide receivers coach two years under Weis when both were with the New England Patriots.
