'Pacman' Jones arrested for assault

Court documents show Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam ''Pacman'' Jones has been arrested and jailed on an assault charge after police said he tried to hurt a woman.

Jones' agent, Peter Schaffer, told multiple media outlets that Jones was standing outside a bar after last Wednesday night's Colorado Rockies-Cincinnati Reds game when two females approached him and asked if he would take a picture with them. Believing that the two women were intoxicated, Jones reportedly declined to pose for a photo, which prompted one of the women to throw a beer bottle at Jones that struck him in the head. Jones reportedly retaliated by slapping the woman who allegedly threw the beer bottle at him.

"He turns around and immediately slaps the person. He has no idea what's going on or who threw the bottle," Schaffer told USA Today. "His teammates have enough of this and they walk out."

"They were drunk, giving him the business, he was trying to relax," Schaffer told NFL.com. "They kept pushing, and then they finally came up and said, 'Let's take a picture.' ... He's thinking, 'The last thing I gotta do is take a picture with two drunk girls', so he says no."

Jones posted on his Twitter page Monday that he has been arrested for defending himself.

Schaffer, meanwhile, reportedly says that multiple witnesses have corroborated Jones' version of events, but his client's reputation is what has triggered his arrest.

"If it was anybody other than Adam Jones, they would have investigated it," Schaffer told ProFootballTalk.com. "If it was anybody other than Adam Jones, they wouldn’t have arrested him."

Schaffer is also reportedly hoping to get a copy of the bar's security video.

Court documents show Jones was released on his own recognizance with his arraignment on the misdemeanor charge scheduled for Tuesday.

Jones has been involved in several off-the-field incidents during his NFL career, including a shooting at a Las Vegas strip club in February 2007 that resulted in two security guards being injured and left Jones suspended for the entire 2007 season. Jones was ruled to be financially responsible for those injuries and was ordered to pay $11.6 million to the victims in June 2012.

The Tennessee Titans selected Jones in the first round (No. 6 overall) of the 2005 NFL draft.
