Browns LB Mingo returns to practice

Published Sep. 2, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Browns rookie linebacker Barkevious Mingo returned to practice in a limited role, a significant step in his recovery from a bruised lung.

Mingo was injured in an Aug. 15 game against Detroit and hospitalized for two days. The first-round draft pick took part in position drills on Monday, but did not have any contact in the portion of practice open to reporters.

It's still not known if Mingo will be able to play Sunday when the Browns open the 2013 season at home against Miami.

Mingo was restricted to riding a stationary bike, some running and light weightlifting last week, so his appearance on the field is a sign he's made good progress.

The Browns plan to use the No. 6 overall pick in this year's draft as an outside pass rusher.
