Carter shows Buckeye love in speech
Cris Carter had too many highlights to count during an NFL career that got him into the Hall of Fame, but he never had a finer moment than his induction speech Saturday in Canton.
Carter, an eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver from Ohio, greeted his hometown with a shout of "O-H!" and never was more emotional than when he was pledging his love and devotion to his alma mater, Ohio State.
Carter began by apologizing for not being able to play his senior year in 1987 after signing with agent Norby Walters.
"To the Buckeye fans: From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely apologize for me signing with a sports agent and losing my eligibility my senior year. That's the only regret I have in my athletic career," he said.
Carter shouted out former OSU teammates and in closing his speech shouted: "Buckeye, born and bred / Now HOFer, even after I'm dead!"
Carter left many friends and family in tears throughout the speech, including his brother, former NBA coach Butch Carter, who was overcome with emotion as his brother praised him for his selflessness and lessons on being a man.
"Butch Carter, today as your baby brother goes into the Hall, you need to know, you're my hero!" Carter said, tears in his eyes.
