Report: Jets to force $3M ultimatum
As difficult as it may be to imagine, things appear to be getting worse between the New York Jets and injured star cornerback Darrelle Revis.
According to a report by ESPN New York, the Jets plan to enforce language in the cornerback’s contract that requires him to attend the team’s offseason conditioning workouts later this month in order to receive his bonus. Revis, who tore the ACL in his right knee in September of last season, has been rehabbing his surgically repaired knee and training in Arizona this offseason.
The report, citing unnamed sources, said it appears Revis would prefer to finish his training in Arizona and avoid any awkward encounters at the Jets’ training facility. Why would it be awkward? Well … the Jets have been actively shopping Revis around to other teams for the last two months and may trade him before or during the NFL Draft, which begins April 25. But the report stated that, “barring a change of heart, Revis is expected to fly to New Jersey for the start of the conditioning program.”
According to the report, Revis has $3 million riding on his attendance at the workouts because of language written into his contract following his last holdout, so it’s likely he will make an appearance. The reports stated that if Revis doesn’t participate in approximately 80 percent of the team’s workouts, he will forfeit a $1 million workout bonus, a $1 million roster bonus (triggered March 17, but payable at a later date) and a $1 million reporting bonus at the start of training camp.
