Report: Wolfe disputing bill before fight
NFL running back Garrett Wolfe, who is facing charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest with violence, was disputing a $1,572 nightclub bill when the incident occurred, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.
According to a police report obtained by the Sun-Times, Wolfe became aggressive while disputing the purchase of three bottles of champagne at Cameo Nightclub in Miami Beach.
Wolfe was restrained briefly after being forcibly removed from the club, according to the report. But the 26-year-old running back lunged at an off-duty police officer after he was released to settle his bill. A second off-duty officer then joined in the fray, according to the report.
Wolfe's mugshot clearly showed abrasions on the left side of his face sustained during the scuffle.
The former Northern Illinois star reportedly threatened to sue the officers and said, "Let's compare bank accounts," at one point during the incident, according to the Sun-Times.
The Bears selected the Chicago-area native in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He played mostly special teams during the past four seasons.
Wolfe recently spoke with the Sun-Times regarding his concern about the potential negative impact the ongoing lockout may have on his career.
"I'm one of those guys caught in limbo," Wolfe told the Sun-Times last week. "I've finished my fourth year. Technically, I'm a free agent but with no [collective bargaining agreement], and under the terms from last year, I'm not a free agent, so I'm caught in between."
