Montana rips SF for not keeping 49ers

It's not like Joe Montana is some kind of Candlestick Park fanboy or anything.

He one said it was the worst field he ever played on, actually, calling it "The Quagmire." He's glad the 49ers are moving, he just wishes they weren't moving to Santa Clara, ESPN.com reported.

The 49ers legend said so at a forum for European NFL fans on Saturday in London. He ripped the city of San Francisco for making "a terrible effort" to keep the team in San Francisco, calling it a wasted opportunity to turn downtown into a sports destination. The San Francisco Giants play downtown to great effect, and the Golden State Warriors are headed to downtown San Francisco, too.

Ever cool, however, Montana did see the bright side.

"It's not like they went to Oakland," he said.

The franchise is still going to refer to itself as the San Francisco 49ers, but it is moving 40 miles south to Santa Clara to play in a new stadium.
