LT unaware title ring was for sale
New York Giants great Lawrence Taylor was unaware his Super Bowl XXV ring was being put up for auction, FOXSports.com has learned.
A longtime representative of Taylor said Friday the former NFL linebacker had given the ring to his son, TJ, who could do whatever he wanted with it.
"Lawrence was in fact unaware of it but said he gave it to TJ, and it's his right to do what he wants with it. He's fine with whatever TJ decided," said Mark Lepselter, LT's rep.
The ring, which Taylor won during the 1990-91 season when the Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills in the title game, is listed on the website of SCP Auctions and will remain open for bids until late Saturday.
As of midday Friday, the highest bid was just under $90,000 on what the auction house calls "arguably the most significant Super Bowl player ring ever offered publicly."
The historic piece of jewelry features "two football-shaped diamonds on the face surrounded by worn blue enameling framed by seventeen smaller diamonds." Taylor's name and jersey number, 56, also appear on the ring.
He was arrested in 2010 for having sex with a 16-year-old prostitute. A judge sentenced him to six years of probation in March 2011, and he was forced to register as a sex offender.
Taylor was also convicted of tax evasion in 2000 and served three months of house arrest. He won two Super Bowls with the Giants, the first in 1986.
