Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel claims he isn't a hero, but the woman who was unaware her home was on fire until Cassel alerted her likely disagrees.

TRUE COURAGE

Some athletes are best remembered for heroic actions off the field.

The fire broke out Thursday night in the Village of Loch Lloyd, Mo., a gated community in Cass County, KMBC-TV reported.

Cassel, who lives nearby, ran to the house after his wife noticed smoke and flames coming from the chimney.

Neighbors said he knocked and rang the doorbell to get the attention of the woman inside, then ran around the house until he saw her come out. She later said she had no idea her home was burning until Cassel showed up.

"I know Matt wouldn't want this kind of attention, but I definitely think he was a hero last night," one witness told KMBC.

Cassel downplayed his actions, saying, "I just ran up to the house and alerted them. The real heroes are the firefighters."

No one was injured in the fire, but the house suffered significant damage, fire marshals said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to KMBC.
