Goodson indicted on weapons charges
New York Jets running back Mike Goodson has been indicted on two weapons charges stemming from a May 17 arrest in which he and another man were in a stopped vehicle on a New Jersey highway.
The Morris County (N.J.) prosecutor's office announced Thursday that Goodson, who is currently rehabbing a season-ending knee injury, and the driver of the car, Garant Evans, were indicted on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon (second degree) and unlawful possession of a prohibited weapon (fourth degree). The latter charge is for the hollow-point bullets that were allegedly found in the car.
Evans was also charged with "certain persons not to have a weapon" (second degree) because he was previously convicted of possession of drugs with an intent to distribute.
The New Jersey State Police report from the May incident stated Evans claimed ownership of the gun shortly after he was arrested. Evans' attorney at the time said any alleged statements would be subject to future hearings.
Both men also are facing charges of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Goodson, who in March signed a three-year, $6.9 million deal as new general manager John Idzik's first free-agent acquisition, missed the preseason to attend to unspecified personal issues. Upon returning, he was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season. In his second game, Goodson tore his ACL and MCL.
Goodson's future with the Jets and in the NFL could very well be determined by whether he beats the charges on which he was indicted Thursday.
