Giants kicker's mom feels bad for Cundiff

Only the mother of a kicker could feel for Baltimore goat Billy Cundiff.

Maggie-Ann Tynes, mom of Giants hero Lawrence Tynes, said Monday her heart still bleeds for a man she's never met: the Ravens field-goal specialist who choked a chip shot that would have kept Baltimore's Super Bowl hopes alive.

"I felt so badly for him [Cundiff], my heart was breaking," the elder Tynes told the New York Post from her home in Milton, Fla.

Without any prompting, Maggie-Ann Tynes launched into an extended expression of sympathy for Cundiff, contrasting the joy she felt hours later after her son's game-winning field goal for the Giants in San Francisco.

"I watched that Baltimore-New England game, and I couldn't believe it," the kind-hearted mom said. "My Irish friend called and said, 'Did you see that poor guy [Cundiff]?' And I said, 'I know how that guy must have felt.'"

The normally reliable Cundiff is doomed to go down as one of the great playoff goats with his stunning miss. He hooked an easy 32-yarder, with 11 seconds left, giving New England the AFC title and a date with Big Blue in Super Bowl XLVI.

"My heart broke for him. God bless him," the elder Tynes added.

"He has to face all his team, and then news [media] after that. My heart just broke for him."

With Cundiff's choke job fresh in her mind, the Giants mom said she was a bundle of nerves Sunday night when Lawrence Tynes lined up for his 31-yard winner.

"I had all my fingers crossed, all my toes crossed," Tynes said in a thick Scottish accent.

"Oh, man, I was just so excited [when the kick went through]."
