Raiders break two NFL penalty records

Published Jan. 1, 2012 12:00 a.m. ET

The Oakland Raiders have broken the NFL records for most penalties and yards penalized in a season.

A holding penalty on Rock Cartwright during the return of the second-half kickoff against San Diego on Sunday eclipsed the mark set by the 1998 Kansas City Chiefs, who had 158 penalties for 1,304 yards. The Raiders tied the record for the most penalties when Stanford Routt was called for pass interference against Malcolm Floyd in the end zone in the second quarter.

Matt Giordano's 15-yard personal foul in the first quarter gave the Raiders the most yards penalized in a season. The Raiders began the game needing four penalties for 11 penalty yards to break both records held by the Chiefs.
