Eagles' Benn tears ACL, out for year
The Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver corps took another hit Tuesday, when the team announced Arrelious Benn will miss the season with a torn ACL.
Benn’s three-year career has been plagued by injuries. He missed a combined 10 games the past two seasons and tore the same ACL in 2010.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Benn in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft and expected him to develop into a starter, but that never happened. He totaled only 59 receptions and 862 yards in three seasons.
The Eagles traded for Benn this offseason, and he was expected to compete for the second starting receiver position that was vacated when incumbent Jeremy Maclin tore his ACL. Benn’s primary competition for that spot has been Riley Cooper, who is involved in a controversy.
Benn is the third Eagles player to go down with a season-ending ACL injury before the team plays its first preseason game, joining Maclin and linebacker Jason Phillips. The injuries already are marring the first season of head coach Chip Kelly, who left the college ranks at Oregon to take over the Eagles.
