Report: Eagles to keep Castillo
The Philadelphia Eagles hired former Miami Dolphins head coach Todd Bowles as defensive backs coach Monday, and will stick with Juan Castillo as defensive coordinator, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Bowles, 48, coached the final three games of the season for the Dolphins on an interim basis, going 2-1 after the firing of Tony Sparano. He interviewed to become Miami's permanent head coach before the team chose Joe Philbin for the job.
Bowles has been a secondary coach in the NFL going back to 2000 and was serving in that capacity under Sparano this past season before his promotion.
Meanwhile, the much-maligned Castillo had a rough first season as Philadelphia's defensive coordinator, with fans calling for his firing throughout the Eagles' disappointing 8-8 season.
Head coach Andy Reid took heavy criticism for the unconventional hiring, since Castillo was serving as Philadelphia's offensive line coach for more than a decade and did not have any noteworthy experience coaching defense.
Under Castillo, the Eagles' defense struggled mightily in the
first half of the season, but improved down the stretch to finish
eighth in yards allowed.
