RG3 says Redskins would have picked him first

Robert Griffin III said the Washington Redskins informed him they would have taken him first overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, ahead of Andrew Luck, if they had held the No. 1 pick.

As expected, Griffin went second Thursday night after the Indianapolis Colts drafted Stanford star Luck with their top pick to fill the quarterback spot involuntarily vacated by Peyton Manning.

But the Redskins quarterback, who beat Luck to the Heisman Trophy off the back of an outstanding year at Baylor, confirmed his new team assured him they would have snubbed Luck for him if the tables were turned.

"They said if Indianapolis would have traded with them and kept Peyton Manning that they would have drafted me as the No.1 overall pick," Griffin told Pro Football Talk.

Asked if the Redskins had told him they would have taken him above Luck, he said, "That's kind of the feeling that it was [the case] ... they told me at two if I was there [in top spot], they were going to take me."

But Griffin said no one -- effectively indicating Luck -- should take any offense by Washington's commitment.

"It's not a shot at anybody," he added. "Just that they're the team that wanted me and they showed it in late February, so I'm glad to be a part of the team."
