Cops: Chargers' Mathews not arrested

Published Jul. 1, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was not arrested Sunday night, police told the Union-Tribune on Monday despite an earlier report that he was allegedly involved in a fight outside a San Diego night club.

Police did confirm that there was a fight outside of Side Bar in San Diego's Gaslamp district on Sunday, but Officer Ed Zwibel told the U-T that Mathews was not arrested and is not a suspect.

Mathews was shocked to hear Monday morning that a report was swirling that he had been arrested.

“I don’t know how my name got twisted in all this (stuff),” Mathews told the U-T. “I don’t know why my name is even being brought up. . . . I didn’t hit anybody. I wasn’t arrested. . . . I didn’t see a fight. I didn’t see anything.”

Zwibel could not confirm if the Chargers RB was present during the fight, but told the U-T that one man injured his lip in the altercation and was taken to a hospital.
