Saints hire Spagnuolo as D-coordinator

Published Jan. 19, 2012 12:00 a.m. ET

Steve Spagnuolo has agreed to join the New Orleans Saints as their new defensive coordinator, FOXSports.com has learned.

Spagnuolo, who had been the Rams head coach for the past three seasons, was fired earlier in January after a 2-14 season.

The Saints’ defensive coordinator position was left vacant after Gregg Williams’ contract expired and he joined new Rams head coach Jeff Fisher's staff.

Spagnuolo’s career in St. Louis ended with a 10-38 record. Before becoming the Rams head coach in 2009, Spagnuolo was the New York Giants defensive coordinator, and he played a major role in the Super Bowl XLII upset of the New England Patriots.
