Report: Tebow honors wounded war vet
While rumors swirled about his future with the Denver Broncos, Tim Tebow was focusing his attention on honoring a wounded war veteran, myFOXtampabay.com reported.
The popular quarterback was the surprise special guest at a Friday night fundraiser in Tampa honoring US Army Ranger Romy Camargo, who was left a quadriplegic after being shot in the neck during a combat mission in Afghanistan.
The Mile High hero had read about what Camargo endured and wanted to meet the wounded soldier.
"He's a real, true-life hero," Tebow said. "So it's very special to have the chance to hang out with him."
Tebow's goodwill gesture came as his Denver bosses apparently were pitching his starting spot with the team to four-time MVP Peyton Manning, now the league's most in-demand free agent after his release from Indianapolis.
Manning spent almost six hours at the team's facility with Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway and coach John Fox. The former Colts star is also due to meet with the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins as multiple teams scramble to court the quarterback.
Tebow, who is hoping to retain his place after leading the Broncos on an improbable run to the AFC West title, made no comment regarding his future in Denver, preferring to focus on Camargo.
"For me, it's so humbling, to see kids and they're like, 'You're my hero.' I do nothing special, athletes do nothing special. We play a silly game," Tebow said. "But here's someone who put his life on the line for our country — that's a real hero."
Camargo said he and his wife, Gabby, were stunned when Tebow arrived at the event at the A La Carte Pavillion.
"That was awesome," the veteran said. "I couldn't believe it. I was like, 'Wow!' ... I'm glad Gabby got to meet him, because she's a big fan."
"It's my pleasure man," Tebow said as he clasped Camargo's left hand, adding, "He's been an inspiration to a lot of people, and he'll continue to be an inspiration to me and so many more, so it's real exciting to get a chance to meet him."
