Wed. Nov 11, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Carter was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Carter had two interceptions, one being a pick-6, against the Broncos Monday night. He started in place of Ryan Clark, but will return to the backup role going forward as Clark was held out of Week 9 due to health concerns from playing in Denver.
Wed. Nov 11, 2009 | Fanball
News: Hines Ward sat out today's practice, according to ESPN.
Impact: The 33-year-old vet generally does not practice on Wednesday to rest. He will be ready to battle the rival Bengals on Sunday. Ward hauled in four catches for 82 yards in their last meeting in Week 3.
Wed. Nov 11, 2009 | Fanball
News: James Farrior did not practice today, according to ESPN. His absence was non-injury related.
Impact: The 34-year-old vet was likely held out to get some rest, and should be good to go for Sunday's game against the Bengals at Heinz Field. Farrior has not missed a game since 2005.
Wed. Nov 11, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Davis (hamstring) is not likely to practice this week, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Coach Mike Tomlin said: "Usually when you pop a hamstring...very rarely are you capable of participating the next week." If Davis is unable to even practice this week, he will most likely miss the game against the Bengals as well. We'll check back towards the end of the week to see if there is any progress.
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | Fanball
News: Lawrence Timmons is uncertain to play in Sunday's home game against the Bengals while still dealing with an ankle injury, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Timmons missed Monday night's win at Denver. He has been performing well this season, and chipped in three sacks and two forced fumbles.
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | Fanball
News: Travis Kirschke is uncertain to play in Sunday's home game against Cincinnati while still recovering from a calf injury, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Kirschke is a quality defensive end, but the Steelers' No. 1 ranked run defense should hold up fine if he is unable to go. He missed Monday night's game at Denver.
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | Fanball
News: Updating an earlier item, fullback Carey Davis is expected to be unavailable for Week 10 after injuring his hamstring in the Steelers win over the Broncos on Monday night, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Rashard Mendenhall ran wild without him anyway, so his absence shouldn't be a huge factor for the Steelers as they face off with the Bengals in a critical AFC North game.
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | Fanball
News: Fullback Carey Davis left the Steelers' win over the Broncos on Monday night with a hamstring injury in the first quarter, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Rashard Mendenhall didn't miss his blocking, however, as he galloped all over the Broncos to the tune of 155 yards. Davis' status will be updated later this week.
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Sweed was active against the Broncos Monday night.
Impact: Sweed did not record any receptions in the game and was targeted just once. He has gone from being the preseason favorite to be the Steelers No. 3 wideout to a frequent name on the inactive list (he was inactive the two prior games).
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | STATS
News: Ward had seven receptions for 44 yards and two touchdowns in Monday's 28-10 win over Denver.
Impact: The Steelers host the Bengals on Sunday, and Ward had four catches for 82 yards in Pittsburgh's 23-20 loss to Cincinnati in Week 3.
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | STATS
News: Mendenhall rushed for 155 yards on 22 carries in Monday's 28-10 win over Denver.
Impact: Mendenhall has run for 528 yards and four touchdowns in five games since taking over the starting running back duties. He could have trouble finding running room Sunday against the Bengals, though. Cincinnati is second in the league against the run, allowing an average of 83.9 yards per game.
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | STATS
News: Roethlisberger completed 21 of 29 passes for 233 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in Monday's 28-10 win over Denver.
Impact: The Steelers host the Bengals on Sunday, and Roethlisberger completed 22 of 31 passes for a TD and a pick in Pittsburgh's 23-20 loss to Cincinnati in Week 3.
Tue. Nov 10, 2009 | Fanball
News: Hines Ward caught seven balls for 44 yards in Monday's win over the Broncos. Ward also found the end zone twice in the game as the Steelers dropped Denver 28-10.
Impact: Just another day at the office for Hines. He only had 44 yards, but he finds a way to get himself open for touchdowns. He is Big Ben's favorite target, and he should continue to produce, especially in PPR leagues.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | Fanball
News: Rashard Mendenhall was an animal again on Monday night as the Steelers beat the Broncos in Denver by a score of 28-10. Mendenhall rushed for 155 yards on 17 carries in the game.
Impact: Mendenhall didn't find pay dirt tonight, but he was still outstanding. He averaged seven yards a carry on the night against a good defense, and he did not lose a fumble, which has been a bit of a problem this season. Medenhall has established himself as a very good back, and as long as they keep feeding him the ball he should be a solid fantasy option.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | Fanball
News: Ben Roethlisberger had a big second half on Monday as the Steelers defeated the Broncos 28-10. Big Ben was 21-for-29 for 233 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in the win.
Impact: Big Ben threw all three of his TD's in the second half after a rough start, and he showed once again why he is one of the best clutch quarterbacks in the game. Two of his touchdowns were to his favorite target Hines Ward, and those two should remain an outstanding combo all season.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Harrison recorded seven tackles (six solo) against the Broncos on Monday.
Impact: The Pittsburgh linebackers didn't record any sacks in Week 9, and they have a tough matchup in Week 10 as well. The Bengals have allowed just 12 sacks through eight games this season.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu had three tackles and an interception against the Broncos on Monday.
Impact: Think the Steelers missed Polamalu when he was injured? Pittsburgh allowed 22 points per game in the four games he missed against just over 12 points per game in the four games he has played. He looked the best he has Monday since returning to game action, so it seems the bye week did a lot of good for his knee.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Fox recorded seven tackles (six solo) in the Monday night win over the Broncos.
Impact: Fox seems to put up decent numbers whenever he gets inserted into the starting lineup. We won't know what his role will be in Week 10 at this point, however, as it will depend on the health of Lawrence Timmons (ankle).
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Keisel recorded a pair of sacks against the Broncos in Week 9.
Impact: Keisel isn't a strong option in fantasy leagues, as he doesn't usually get a high number of tackles or sacks.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Carter returned an interception for a touchdown against the Broncos on Monday night.
Impact: Carter, starting in place of Ryan Clark, also added a second interception in the closing seconds of the game. Health issues continue to surround the Pittsburgh defense, but whoever gets subbed in seems to be able to step up and contribute in some way.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Miller had three receptions for 18 yards in Monday's win at Denver.
Impact: It was a quiet night for Miller as Santonio Holmes (six catches, 93 yards), Mike Wallace (four catches, 69 yards) and Hines Ward (seven catches, 44 yards) did the damage to the Broncos. Despite the lack of production, he stands third in the league among tight ends in receptions (43) and 11th in yards (371).
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker didn't record any carries or catches in Monday's game against the Broncos.
Impact: Parker didn't even get on the field until there were about five minutes left in the third quarter. The way Rashard Mendenhall ran against the Broncos (22 carries, 155 yards), it was no surprise Parker was kept on the sidelines.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | Fanball
News: Steelers' Week 9 inactives: QB Dennis Dixon, OG Kraig Urbik, LB Lawrence Timmons, DL Ra'shon Harris, FS Ryan Clark, WR Shaun McDonald, OT Tony Hills, DL Travis Kirschke.
Impact: The team decided to keep Clark out tonight due to his sickle-cell condition, and it looks like the right move. There is no reason to risk his health for one game, so he will watch from the sidelines. Tyrone Carter and Ryan Mundy are expected to split time in Clark's absence.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Wallace caught four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown in Pittsburgh's 28-10 victory over the Broncos on Monday night.
Impact: This is becoming a typical game for the explosive rookie, who seems to catch three or four passes every week, averages just over 65 yards receiving per game, and is now adding touchdowns to the mix. To say that he has adequately replaced Nate Washington is an understatement.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Holmes caught six passes for 93 yards in Pittsburgh's 28-10 victory over the Broncos on Monday night.
Impact: Holmes led the Steelers in yards receiving, but it was teammate Hines Ward who got the red zone looks and the two touchdowns in close, while rookie Mike Wallace scored from further out (25 yards).
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Roethlisberger completed 21 of 29 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns while tossing one interception and losing a fumble in Pittsburgh's 28-10 victory over the Broncos on Monday night.
Impact: The Steelers struggled offensively in the first half, as the Broncos did a good job pressuring Roethlisberger and held Pittsburgh to a total of 54 yards. However, when they turned to their no-huddle offense in the second half, things started clicking. Big Ben had some bad moments, like getting picked off in the endzone and getting the ball stripped for a Denver touchdown, but he responded well and orchestrated some big drives in leading the Steelers to the 28-10 win.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall carried 22 times for 155 yards in Pittsburgh's 28-10 victory over the Broncos on Monday night.
Impact: It could have been a monster game for Mendenhall had the Steelers called his number instead of going to Hines Ward twice from the three-yard line, but as it stands, the second-year back averaged 7.0 yards per tote and was especially effective salting the game away late. Another key stat for the second-year back: no fumbles lost as he had the past two games. Mewelde Moore did spell him a bit in the fourth quarter, but did not replace him when the team got in the red zone.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Ward had seven catches for 44 yards and two touchdowns in Pittsburgh's 28-10 victory over the Broncos on Monday night.
Impact: It is fitting that a hard-nosed player like Ward would score on a pair of 3-yard touchdown passes, considering that the game was often ugly and defined by early defensive touchdowns.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | Fanball
News: According to the Twitter page of NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Saints worked out defensive linemen Orpheus Roye, Chuck Darby, and Rodney Leisle on Monday.
Impact: Roye is a defensive end, and the other two players are both defensive tackles. The Saints are looking for some depth on their D-line, but no word yet on whether any of these players will get a contract offer.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | STATS
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers are playing it safe with Clark and holding him out of the team's game at Denver. Clark nearly died following a game in Denver two years ago because of a rare blood disorder that is aggravated by playing in high altitude.
Impact: Clark had his spleen and gall bladder removed during separate operations and he lost 30 pounds after the Oct. 21, 2007, game in Invesco Field that ended his season. Many of Clark's teammates told him he should skip this game. Clark was doing some light running on the field Monday but was not going to dress for the game. He should be back Sunday against Cincinnati.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | Fanball
News: Ryan Clark, who has the sickle-cell trait, will not play on Monday night in the thin air of Denver, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.
Impact: And mercifully so. The Steelers dragged this decision on for an interminable amount of time. Clark will be back and chomping at the bit in Week 10.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | Fanball
News: Ryan Clark has traveled with the Steelers to Denver, but is not expected to play against the Broncos on Monday night, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Clark has sickle-cell trait, and nearly died the last time he played in Denver after his body had an awful reaction to exerting itself in Colorado's thin air.
Impact: It seems irresponsible for the Steelers not to have taken the decision of whether or not to play out of Clark's hands a long time ago, but nevertheless, here we are. It would be fool's errand for Clark to play tonight, whether he's been medically cleared or not, and you should not expect to see him on the field.
Mon. Nov 9, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Clark is out for Monday night's game in Denver because of possible sickle cell complications, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Impact: Clark was actually cleared to play in the game -- possibly because he no longer has a spleen or gall bladder, thereby lessening or diminishing the chance of complications of high intensity exertion in a high altitude -- but the Steelers and the player seem to be doing the smart thing here by wiping out any risk.
Sat. Nov 7, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Fox will start against the Broncos Monday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Lawrence Timmons will miss the Monday night game due to an ankle injury, so Fox will be inserted into the starting lineup. He racked up 15 tackles in the two games he started for Timmons at the start of the season and had a pick-six when he replaced Timmons against the Vikings in Week 7. There is no reason to think there will be a sharp drop in defense.
Sat. Nov 7, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Clark is listed as questionable due to an illness for Monday's game in Denver, according to the Steelers' injury report.
Impact: The Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports that Clark was a full participant in all three practices this week, but unlikely to play due to his rare blood disorder.
Sat. Nov 7, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Timmons (ankle) is listed as doubtful for Monday's game against the Broncos, the Steelers' official site reports.
Impact: The Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports that Timmons won't play Monday, despite being listed as doubtful. "I am not going to be able to play," Timmons said after missing Saturday's practice. Keyaron Fox will get the start.
Sat. Nov 7, 2009 | Fanball
News: According to the injury report for Monday's game, Steelers' safety Ryan Clark is being listed as doubtful. Clark will likely miss the game due to his sickle-cell trait.
Impact: Clark has made it known that he wants to play, but the thin air in Denver can create real problems with this illness. Don't expect him to be available, as the coaching staff has indicated he will likely be kept out.
Sat. Nov 7, 2009 | Fanball
News: Dealing with a calf injury, Travis Kirschke will be unable to go when the Steelers take on the Broncos on Monday night, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Impact: Nick Eason will fill-in at left end for Kirschke, who was already filling in for Aaron Smith.
Sat. Nov 7, 2009 | Fanball
News: Lawrence Timmons (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 9, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Impact: Keyaron Fox will take his place at inside linebacker. It will be the first game he's missed since Week 1.
Sat. Nov 7, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Timmons (ankle) returned to practice Friday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Timmons was limited Friday, but it was the first time he practiced this week. The team has not said if he will play against the Broncos Monday night, but odds are he will be limited for the game even if he is able to suit up.
Sat. Nov 7, 2009 | RotoWire
News: The Steelers will not make a formal announcement on whether or not Clark will play in Week 9, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: "This is not about me. It's two good teams playing on Monday. Whether I play or not, the game is going to go on, and that's what I do know. They won't stop the game if I don't play," Clark was quoted. Although the team will not confirm his status prior to the game, Clark will be held out in all likelihood. The Steelers will use a combination of Tyrone Carter and Ryan Mundy in his place.
Fri. Nov 6, 2009 | STATS
News: The woman who filed a lawsuit accusing Roethlisberger of raping her has quit her job at the Lake Tahoe hotel-casino where she claims the assault occurred in the NFL quarterback's penthouse room more than a year ago.
Impact: The woman had been working as a VIP host at Harrah's Lake Tahoe in July 2008 when she alleges the two-time Super Bowl champ for the Pittsburgh Steelers lured her to his room under false pretenses and forced himself on her. He was in town playing in a celebrity golf tournament. Roethlisberger has denied the allegations and maintains the woman acted voluntarily at all times while in his room.
Fri. Nov 6, 2009 | Fanball
News: Willie Parker (turf toe) is not expected to be at 100 percent health for the rest of the season, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Impact: Not a good recipe for fantasy value when you are already backing up Rashard Mendenhall. Parker is now only worth owning in very deep leagues.
Fri. Nov 6, 2009 | RotoWire
News: The Steelers are expected to announce on Friday that Clark will not play against the Broncos in Week 9, according to KDKA.com.
Impact: It's the smart move by the Steelers considering the health complications Clark had when he played in Denver in 2007. Tyrone Carter is expected to start in place of Clark, but Ryan Mundy will also be in the mix for the game.
Fri. Nov 6, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said Parker's turf toe is still not completely healed, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: "He probably won't be (100 percent) the rest of the year," Arians was quoted. Some tough news for Parker here. It was already noticeable he lost a step before the injury. If his ability to plant, cut and go on the field will be hindered the rest of the year, the odds that he will be a strong factor in the rushing attack, let alone get the starting job back from Rashard Mendenhall, don't look too rosy at this point.
Fri. Nov 6, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Fox may start against the Broncos in Week 9, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Lawrence Timmons is day-to-day with the ankle injury he suffered in Week 7, so odds are Fox will start and play in place of Timmons Monday. Fox has played well when called upon in Timmons' absence this year and it looks like he'll get another chance Monday night.
Fri. Nov 6, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Timmons (ankle) may not start against the Broncos in Week 9, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said it is "day-to-day" if he will play at all Monday night.
Impact: Timmons said on his blog that he had to wear a protective boot for about a week, and although it is off now, he is not able to run. Unless the team gives a clear, positive injury status prior to Sunday, you might want to consider sitting Timmons this week. Those in IDP leagues run the risk of getting short-changed a player if he winds up being a game-time decision since the Steelers are on Monday night.
Thu. Nov 5, 2009 | Fanball
News: Lawrence Timmons missed Thursday's practice while nursing an ankle ailment, according to NFL.com.
Impact: Head coach Mike Tomlin is hopeful that Timmons will be ready to play in Monday night's game at Denver. Timmons is performing well, and has three sacks over his last three games.
Thu. Nov 5, 2009 | STATS
News: Clark may be saying everything he needs to say with his growing silence. The safety is usually one of the team's most talkative players, but he is saying little as it becomes increasingly likely he won't play Monday in Denver due to a rare blood condition that nearly caused him to die after playing there two years ago.
Impact: Nearly all of Clark's teammates are urging him to skip the game. The other Steelers safeties are being readied to play, and Clark does not appear as upbeat or as excited as he normally does before a game. Before practice on Thursday, when he often chats with reporters, he sat alone in front of his locker, looking at messages on his cell phone.
Thu. Nov 5, 2009 | STATS
News: Roethlisberger may be especially eager to go to the no-huddle Monday night in Denver, given how much success the Ravens had while running 31 plays out of no-huddle sets during their 30-7 victory over the Broncos on Sunday.
Impact: Roethlisberger excels with the no-huddle. "It's a possibility," Roethlisberger said. "We'll go into it with the mentality that we'll go in with the game plan we've got and, if we need to go into the no-huddle, we'll do it."
Thu. Nov 5, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker is not listed on Thursday's practice participation/injury report.
Impact: It looks like Parker is past the illness that slowed him on Monday. On top of that, his toe is coming around. Still, he'll be working behind Rashard Mendenhall Monday against the Broncos.
Wed. Nov 4, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall will start against the Broncos in Week 9, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette confirms.
Impact: If Mendenhall exhibits trouble handling the altitude at Denver (or perhaps if his fumble issues still plague him), Willie Parker might get more involved in the offense since he said his health issues (turf toe, illness) have improved. However, whether it's Mendenhall or Parker, the Steelers have a tough task at hand Monday night. The Broncos are allowing an average of just over 86 yards on the ground per game and have given up only three rushing touchdowns this season.
Wed. Nov 4, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker (illness) might not use the shoes designed for his turf toe in Week 9, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Parker, who also said he has recovered from his recent illness, feels the toe has recovered to the point that he will not need to don the specially-designed shoes. He will again back up Rashard Mendenhall against the Broncos, but might see more carries than he has the last two games since he is used to the altitude problems at Denver.
Wed. Nov 4, 2009 | RotoWire
News: The Steelers are leaning towards holding Clark out of the Monday night matchup with Denver, according to NFL.com.
Impact: No word has come from the organization, but "league sources" say the team does not want to risk any complications with Clark's sickle-cell trait. If Clark does sit the game out, Tyrone Carter is expected to start in his place.
Wed. Nov 4, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Timmons (ankle) did not practice Thursday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Impact: Timmons downplayed the ankle injury last week and said he expected to play in Week 9, but he has yet to practice this week. The team has not said if his status is in jeopardy at this point.
Wed. Nov 4, 2009 | Fanball
News: Free Safety Ryan Clark is not likely to play play in Monday night's game against the Broncos, according to NFL.com. The move is expected due to Clark's sickle-cell trait and the thin air in Denver presents complications.
Impact: Clark will be fine to play in the remaining Steelers games, and is a decent IDP option. He has 31 solo tackles and two interceptions on the season.
Wed. Nov 4, 2009 | RotoWire
News: If Ryan Clark is held out of Monday night's game against the Broncos, Carter will start in his place, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Carter also got the nod earlier this season when Troy Polamalu injured his knee, so it makes sense to turn to Carter once again.
Tue. Nov 3, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) did not practice Monday, the Beaver County Times reports.
Impact: Polamalu is certain he will play against the Broncos Monday night, however, so the move was just to give added recovery time to his injured knee.
Tue. Nov 3, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Holmes is not worried about complications from sickle-cell trait when the Steelers play at Denver in Week 9, the Pittsburh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Holmes said he only had some trouble breathing in the 2007 game, not like teammate Ryan Clark, who had his gall bladder and spleen removed after the game. "It hadn't affected me the last time we played there so I don't think it will this time," Holmes was quoted.
Tue. Nov 3, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Timmons (ankle) did not practice Monday, the Steelers' web site reports.
Impact: Coach Mike Tomlin said Timmons is considered questionable at this point. The team is off Tuesday, so we'll check back on Wednesday to see if Timmons has improved any.
Tue. Nov 3, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker did not practice Monday due to illness, the Steelers' web site reports.
Impact: Coach Mike Tomlin said Parker "was running a fever so we sent him to the docs...I anticipate him being fine." There is no Tuesday practice, so we'll check back on Wednesday to see if Parker returns.
Mon. Nov 2, 2009 | Fanball
News: Willie Parker missed Steelers practice on Monday with an illness, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: As has been the case the past few weeks, Parker is not likely to be the Steelers' feature back when they take on the Broncos next Monday night. Parker is now a handcuff for Rashard Mendenhall, not vice versa.
Nov 1, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Clark has been medically cleared to play in Denver Week 9, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: "Basically, I've been cleared by all the doctors, but the decision still hasn't been made," Clark said. It looks like we'll have to wait a few more days to hear if Clark and the team decide playing is worth the risk.
Thu. Oct 29, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Smith (torn rotator cuff) has not yet undergone surgery, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Smith's surgery has been delayed twice, once because of the flu and most recently because of a sinus infection. He will have the surgery as soon as the infection clears up. Smith, who is undergoing the same surgery Hines Ward had this past offseason, is expected to be fine for the 2010 season.
Thu. Oct 29, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Harrison was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Month, the Steelers' web site reports.
Impact: In four October games, Harrison piled up 25 total tackles, seven sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He leads the Steelers with 35 solo tackles and eight sacks for the season and is an every-week player in IDP leagues. Just remember not to play him this week with the Steelers on bye.
Tue. Oct 27, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Timmons said he suffered a Grade 1 sprain of his right ankle in Sunday's game against the Vikings, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Timmons said the injury is "not a big deal" and he expects to play against the Broncos in Week 9. He also added that he should come back faster from the ankle injury he sustained in the first game of the season, especially with the team on bye. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that only rookies and players on the practice squad will practice this week. All other players are off until Monday.
Mon. Oct 26, 2009 | STATS
News: Holmes had two catches for 59 yards Sunday in the Steelers' 27-17 win over Minnesota.
Impact: Holmes hasn't had quite the season many expected of him, but he has made big catches when they count, much like he did in securing the Steelers' Super Bowl victory over Arizona.
Mon. Oct 26, 2009 | STATS
News: Ward was held to one catch for three yards Sunday in the Steelers' 27-17 win over Minnesota.
Impact: The NFL's leading receiver coming into the game, Ward was hardly thrown to Sunday, but that's not completely out of character for a team that has Heath Miller, Santonio Holmes and Mike Wallace. Expect Ward to get the ball much more after Pittsburgh's bye.
Mon. Oct 26, 2009 | STATS
News: Mendenhall had 10 carries for 69 yards but also had a costly fumble in the Steelers' 27-17 win over Minnesota on Sunday.
Impact: Mendenhall is emerging as the Steelers' no-doubt starter over Willie Parker, but he's still fumbling too much for coach Mike Tomlin's liking.
Mon. Oct 26, 2009 | STATS
News: Roethlisberger was 14 of 26 for 175 yards and a touchdown Sunday in the Steelers' 27-17 win over Minnesota.
Impact: It wasn't the best fantasy day for the QB who came into the day leading the NFL in passing, but the Steelers scored two defensive touchdowns, thus limiting somewhat how much Roethlisberger was needed.
Mon. Oct 26, 2009 | STATS
News: Clark isn't injured, yet he isn't sure if he can play in the team's next game Nov. 9 at Denver. Doctors told him his sickle-cell trait was aggravated by the high altitude in Denver and caused a serious blood disorder. Because of his condition, Clark also had problems playing in Denver while he was with the Redskins in 2005.
Impact: Clark became ill during an Oct. 21, 2007, game in Denver and spent the night in a Denver hospital. His condition worsened after he returned to Pittsburgh. Clark had to have his spleen and gall bladder removed, and he lost more than 30 pounds before finally regaining his strength.
Mon. Oct 26, 2009 | RotoWire
News: No decision has been reached yet on whether or not Clark will play against the Broncos in Week 9, the Beaver County Times reports.
Impact: Clark has sickle-cell trait and it has adverse reactions to the altitude in Denver (he had to have his spleen and gall bladder removed the last time he played in Denver). He said physicians have been consulted and "things look good," but he also stated "it's still a tough decision." With the Steelers on bye for Week 8, the team has extra time to render a decision.
Mon. Oct 26, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) did wear a knee brace against the Vikings Sunday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review confirms.
Impact: Polamalu was asked how well he moved sporting the brace and simply said "good enough to win." At least he gets some extra recovery time for the knee as the Steelers are on bye in Week 8.

News: Mendenhall's fumble issues has not caused him to lose his job as starting running back at this point, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Coach Mike Tomlin was asked if he would re-think Mendenhall being first on the depth chart due to his red zone fumbles the past two weeks and he responded, "Not at all." Good news for Mendenhall, for now, but it's definitely an issue the team will continue to address as they have this past week.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Reed made both of his field goal attempts against the Vikings Sunday.
Impact: Reed was able to put aside the controversy of his off-field incident from last Sunday. He connected on field goals from 39 and 27 yards and added three PATs.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Woodley returned a fumble recovery for a 77-yard touchdown in Sunday's game against Minnesota.
Impact: The Steel Curtain defense has had a tough time in the fourth quarter this year, but stepped up their game this time to snag the win. Woodley's touchdown gave the Steelers a 10-point lead with under seven minutes left and then fellow linebacker Keyaron Fox returned an interception for a touchdown with a minute left to ice the game.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) had six tackles and two passes defensed against Minnesota in Week 7.
Impact: Polamalu had his knee checked out by the medical staff on the sidelines at one point but it didn't seem to be anything major as he played the whole game. You can tell he doesn't have full mobility, but is still a factor on the field and for the Steelers' psyche.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Harrison notched a pair of sacks and six solo tackles in Sunday's win over the Vikings.
Impact: After failing to record a sack in the first two games, Harrison has rolled off eight in the last five weeks. Unfortunately, you will not have his services in Week 8 with Pittsburgh heading to their bye.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Clark had seven tackles (six solo) against the Vikings in Week 7.
Impact: Clark bounces back from his quiet Week 6 (two tackles) and now has 39 total tackles for the season.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Farrior racked up 15 tackles (nine solo) and a sack in Sunday's win over Minnesota.
Impact: The 34-year old tackling machine shows he still has plenty of tread left on the tires. He bumps his season total up to 49 tackles with Sunday's performance.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Ward had just one catch for three yards in Week 7.
Impact: Weeks like this are bound to happen as it was by far the worst game of the season thus far for Ward, who had been averaging six catches and 99 yards per game. Just remember to sit Ward and crew in Week 8 as they are on bye.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Miller had six catches for 38 yards (no touchdowns) against the Vikings in Week 7.
Impact: Miller's run of three games with a touchdown came to an end Sunday, but he extended his run of five or more receptions to five games. He now has 40 catches this season, which is tops among tight ends across the league.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Holmes had two catches for 59 yards in Sunday's win over Minnesota.
Impact: With 497 yards receiving, Holmes is on pace for his first 1,000 yard season. However, he is also on pace for his lowest touchdown total since his rookie season. Holmes had a touchdown catch against the Vikings called back by a offensive pass interference call (on Heath Miller), so bottom line, he failed to put a notch in the touchdown column for the sixth straight week. Those in touchdown heavy leagues get a breather in Week 8 from the frustration as the Steelers are on bye.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Wallace had three receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown in Week 7. He also added two rushes for 19 yards.
Impact: Wallace is really coming through as a big-play man for Steelers now. He may not haul in a ton of catches (averages three per game), but he definitely makes them count. He is now averaging about 64 yards receiving per game over the last five contests and with 368 yards receiving for the season. He now ranks among the top 30 in the league. He is not really a WR1 or WR2, but scoop him up if he is somehow still available in your league.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker had just one carry for two yards in Sunday's matchup with the Vikings.
Impact: The Steelers didn't really try to eat up the clock via the ground game in general as Rashard Mendenhall had just 10 carries (albeit for 69 yards). Parker didn't really get much of a chance to show that the turf toe is doing better, so as of this point, assume it's status quo. Luckily, the Steelers are on bye in Week 8, so he gets some extra rest and recovery at the right time.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall (knee) rushed 10 times for 69 yards (zero touchdowns) against the Vikings Sunday.
Impact: Mendenhall was again effective at running the ball (particularly in the second half with 52 yards) and had carries of 14, 16 and 17 yards in the game. However, he lost a crucial fumble in the red zone for the second straight week. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Steelers worked on Mendenhall's fumble issues this past week, but it looks like he needs some extra attention. The team turned to Mewelde Moore when they got the ball back from Minny after the Mendenhall fumble.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Roethlisberger went 14-for-26 with 175 yards and a touchdown in the Week 7 win over Minnesota.
Impact: It's the first time this season Roethlisberger attempted less than 30 passes and threw for under 200 yards. The game plan seemed almost timid in nature as the Steelers did not seem interested in really exploiting the absence of Antoine Winfield in the secondary. Regardless, the Steelers walked away with the win for the fourth straight week and now stand at 5-2 heading into their bye week.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Fox had an 82-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Vikings Sunday.
Impact: Fox came in the game in place of Lawrence Timmons, who left the game with an ankle injury. His play sealed the win for the Steelers as it came with the Vikings deep in Steeler territory and looking to either tie the game with a field goal or go for the win.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Timmons left Sunday's game against the Vikings in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
Impact: Timmons was able to walk off on his own, but was replaced by Keyaron Fox for the remainder of the game. Keep in mind, though, the Steelers are on bye in Week 8 so Timmons should have plenty of time to recover as long as the injury is not severe.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Sweed is inactive for Sunday's game against the Vikings.
Impact: Shaun McDonald gets the nod as the Steelers' No. 4 receiver against an injury-stricken Minnesota secondary in Week 7.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Vikings, the Steelers' official site reports.
Impact: The Vikings are banged up in the secondary, so look for the Steelers to try and take advantage of their weakness through the air. That said, Mendenhall is a strong play even against a tough Minnesota run defense since he's usurped Willie Parker for the starting gig.
Oct 25, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Vikings, the Steelers' official site reports.
Impact: As far as your IDP plans go, Polamalu is ready to roll again in Week 7 if you need him.
Sat. Oct 24, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) might again attempt to sport the brace he wears during practice this Sunday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Polamalu said the brace is "bothersome to wear," but will probably still give it another go because it is a little less restrictive with all the wear from practice. If it limits him against the Vikings, he will likely ditch it as he did in Week 6.
Fri. Oct 23, 2009 | STATS
News: Polamalu has returned to practice after sitting out two days to rest his still-healing left knee.
Impact: Polamalu practiced Friday and is planning to play Sunday against the unbeaten Vikings. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. The five-time Pro Bowl safety tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee Sept. 10 against Tennessee. He returned last Sunday against Cleveland, although he said an additional week or two off would have helped the knee recover faster. After practicing Friday with a knee brace, Polamalu plans to wear it Sunday.
Fri. Oct 23, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) returned to practice Friday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Polamalu, who is bouncing back from an MCL sprain that caused him to miss four games, worked with the Steelers' first-team defense Friday, virtually assuring that he'll be out there Sunday against the Vikings.
Fri. Oct 23, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall (knee) will play and start against the Vikings in Week 7, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette confirms.
Impact: Mendenhall was limited in practice Wednesday, but was a full participant Thursday. With no reported lingering issues at this point, he is good to go for Sunday.
Fri. Oct 23, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker said his turf toe is still swollen, but is also getting better, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: "I'm starting to plant, cut and do all that stuff because it's starting to heal up...This week is the best that it's been," he was quoted. Parker is expected to be play against the Vikings in Week 7, but we'll have to wait to see if there is a noticeable improvement in his play.
Thu. Oct 22, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall (bruised knee) practiced fully Thursday.
Impact: Mendenhall may end up listed as probable Friday, but barring a setback, his status for Sunday's game against the Vikings does not appear to be in any doubt.
Thu. Oct 22, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) missed practice for the second straight day Thursday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: There is still no talk of Polamalu not being able to play in Week 7, so it appears this is continued rest and recovery for his knee. "I don't think it benefits anybody to not practice, but I think regarding injuries it's a benefit...I feel pretty good right now," he was quoted. For now, expect to see him against the Vikings Sunday.
Thu. Oct 22, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker admitted his turf toe is not completely healed, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: "I'm not all the way back. I'm not Willie Parker, I'm not myself right now," he was quoted. In all honesty, Parker wasn't Fast Willie even before the turf toe. It looks like the back-to-back 300-plus carry seasons (2006, 2007) coupled with the leg fracture and knee injury over the last two years respectively have just taken too much of a toll on his body. The team will still try to get him involved in the offense with Rashard Mendenhall starting, but if the burst is not there, he's going to continue struggling rushing the ball as he is averaging a career-low 3.1 yards per carry.
Wed. Oct 21, 2009 | STATS
News: Reed has apologized to his teammates, saying he didn't mean to cause a distraction by getting involved in a run-in with Pittsburgh police several hours after kicking two field goals against Cleveland.
Impact: The incident was the second involving Reed this year and led to meetings with team president Art Rooney II, director of football operations Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin, none of whom was pleased with Reed's actions. Reed expects the investigation to take some time, but said Wednesday he is certain he won't be suspended. He also said he told his agent, Don Henderson, not to comment on the case. Henderson has said Reed will fight the charges.
Wed. Oct 21, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall (bruised knee) was limited at practice Wednesday.
Impact: Mendenhall's injury isn't expected to affect his Week 7 availability and (per coach Mike Tomlin) he's expected to get the majority of the carries for the Steelers, despite the return of Willie Parker.
Wed. Oct 21, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) did not practice Wednesday.
Impact: No setbacks have been reported with Polamalu's knee, so unless we hear otherwise, we'll chalk this up to maintenance/rest for the hard-hitting safety.
Tue. Oct 20, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Reed will play in Week 7, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed he will not de-activate Reed against the Vikings for his incident with police Sunday night. Reed's agent said his client will dispute the charges stemming from the altercation.
Tue. Oct 20, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) might be limited in practice this week, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: It doesn't seem like a cause for concern at this point as coach Mike Tomlin said Polamalu's knee responded well after playing Week 6. It's a smart move to give him as much rest as possible to give the knee more time to recover and heal.
Tue. Oct 20, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Rashard Mendenhall has passed Parker (toe) on the depth chart, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: "It's great to have Willie back, but Rashard has the hot hand," Tomlin stated. How the carries gets split up is not yet known, but for now, figure it to be along the lines of the two-to-one series ratio that was in effect to start the season. As for how long Parker sits at No. 2 will be tied to how well Mendenhall continues to produce.
Tue. Oct 20, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Coach Mike Tomlin has named Mendenhall the starting running back, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "It's great to have Willie back, but Rashard has the hot hand if you will," Tomlin was quoted.
Impact: It's a great opportunity here for Mendenhall, but he needs to continue producing on the field. Tomlin did not say this was for the remainder of the season, just that he has the "hot hand" right now. The Steelers next three opponents are in the top 11 for rushing defense: the Vikings (9th), Broncos (4th) and Bengals (11th). He has his work cut out for him the next few weeks. Also note that Mendenhall is dealing with a bruised knee and may be limited in practice this week, but is expected to play against the Vikings in Week 7.
Mon. Oct 19, 2009 | STATS
News: Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says Reed will play in Sunday's home game against the Minnesota Vikings despite a recent brush with the law.
Impact: Reed is charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness for allegedly scuffling with Pittsburgh police outside a bar near Heinz Field in the hours after Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns. Police were citing Reed's teammate Matt Spaeth for allegedly urinating outside the bar when Reed intervened. Police say Reed took a "fighting stance'' and challenged the officers. Reed's agent denies that.
Mon. Oct 19, 2009 | STATS
News: Ward had eight catches for 159 yards in Pittsburgh's 27-14 win over Cleveland onSunday.
Impact: Ward was a part of a 417-yard passing day by Ben Roethlisberger. "It was kind of reminiscent of when Tommy Maddox was here, we were slinging the ball around," said Ward, whose 52-yard scoring catch put the Steelers up 14-0 in the second quarter. Ward has scored in each of his last two games and is on pace to have one of the best seasons of his career.
Mon. Oct 19, 2009 | STATS
News: Roethlisberger passed for 417 yards in Pittsburgh's 27-14 win over Cleveland on Sunday.
Impact: It was Roethlisberger's second career 400-yard game. On Sunday, Roethlisberger will be slinging it against Brett Favre and the Vikings in a matchup the Steelers' defense is already gearing up for. "I know I'm excited," safety Ryan Clark said.
Mon. Oct 19, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Reed was issued a citation for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, simple assault and resisting arrest Sunday night, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: This is the second off-field incident for Reed this year as he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and criminal mischief back in February. No court dates have been set yet.
Mon. Oct 19, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) did not wear a knee brace against the Browns Sunday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Polamalu ditched the brace after the warm-ups, saying he couldn't bend his leg. He also said he had some pain in his ligaments when he hit his knee on the ground during his interception. "It wasn't the MCL. When you have a knee injury and you hit it against the ground, it hurts." Everything looks good for now, we just need to hear how the knee feels the day after the game.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Reed connected on both of his field goal attempts against Cleveland in Week 6 and added three PATs.
Impact: Reed improves his efficiency a bit and now has made 7 of his 10 field goal attempts this year.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Timmons had his best game of the season against the Browns in Week 6.
Impact: Timmons had five tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles Sunday. He really was effective at busting through the line to create pressure on Cleveland's offensive attack.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Wallace had 71 total yards against the Browns in Week 6.
Impact: Wallace had 50 yards receiving (two catches) and 21 yards rushing, which came on an end-around. Wallace has been a good asset in the passing game, giving Ben Roethlisberger another weapon to control the flow of the game instead of the offense going mainly through the ground attack.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Ward racked up 159 yards and a touchdown on eight catches in Week 6.
Impact: Ward nearly had a second touchdown catch, but it was overturned when he could not maintain control of the ball while rolling out of bounds. As long as the Steelers continue to air things out (Ben Roethlisberger has attempted 30 or more passes in every game), Ward and the rest of the receiving crew will reap the benefits.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Miller hauled in five catches for 80 yards and a touchdown against the Browns Sunday.
Impact: Miller has caught five or more passes in five out of six games thus far as he continues to be Ben Roethlisberger's safety net. With 34 receptions and four touchdowns this season already, he is well on his way to setting career marks in both categories.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Holmes had five catches for 104 yards against the Browns in Week 6.
Impact: The extra attention he garners opens things up in the passing game, especially underneath (Heath Miller says thanks), but his personal stats haven't been as robust as some would have hoped. Holmes again failed to hit paydirt for the fifth straight game, but at least he was able to go over 100 yards in a game for the first time since Week 1.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker (toe) had just seven carries for 26 yards (zero touchdowns) and a fumble against Cleveland in Week 6. He also had one reception for nine yards.
Impact: Parker had a couple of nice nine-yard runs in the game, but nothing really to go crazy about. For the most part, it seemed the Steelers tried to go with the two-to-one series ratio with Rashard Mendenhall being the primary ball carrier. We'll wait a day or two to hopefully hear how Parker says the toe felt both during and after the game. The "division of labor" will also be of interest this week to see if it remains the same against the Vikings in Week 7.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall rushed 17 times for 62 yards and a touchdown in the Week 6 win over Cleveland. He added two receptions for 15 yards, but also had a fumble.
Impact: Another effective (though not outstanding) starting performance for Mendenhall. In comparison, Parker had seven carries for 26 yards and a fumble. Yes, Parker is coming off turf toe and likely is still hampered by it a bit, but it's tough not to see that Mendenhall is simply the better back (and fantasy option) right now.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) had four total tackles (two solo) and an interception in his return to the gridiron in Week 6.
Impact: The Steel City (and Polamalu owners) had a bit of a scare on his interception as his injured knee hit the ground pretty hard and he limped off the field. Luckily, he returned on the next defensive series and finished out the game. His presence seemed to bring the swagger back to the defense as the pass rush was terrific and they held an opponent scoreless in the fourth quarter for the first time this season.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Roethlisberger threw for 417 yards in the Week 6 win over the Browns.
Impact: The yardage total represents the second-highest total of his career. Roethlisberger completed 23-of-35 passes with two touchdowns and one interception and went over 300 yards passing for the third time this season (matching his 2008 mark already). If the 2009 version of Big Ben continues to be Air Roethlisberger, he will continue to make fantasy owners smile.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Though Parker (toe) will play Sunday, Rashard Mendenhall will start for the Steelers Sunday against the Browns, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Mendenhall figures to get a larger portion of the carries in Parker's return, but the Browns have had trouble stopping the run, so there are fantasy points up for grabs here.
Oct 18, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Though Willie Parker is active, Mendenhall will start at running back for the Steelers Sunday against the Browns, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: The Browns have had a hard time stopping the run, so Mendenhall figures to be in a good spot here, despite the return of Parker.
Sat. Oct 17, 2009 | RotoWire
News: It's not yet known if Sweed or Shaun McDonald will get the nod as the No. 4 receiver in Week 6.
Impact: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Sweed might have the edge over McDonald due to his work on special teams in Week 5. "Last week, Limas provided us a little more assistance in special teams. That adds value when you determine who plays for you," Coach Mike Tomlin was quoted. Whoever gets the call will have minimal opportunities to have a fantasy impact Sunday, though.
Sat. Oct 17, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker (toe) will play against the Browns on Sunday, but is not expected to start, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: Rashard Mendenhall is expected to start and get a larger portion of the carries, but he said the actual rotation between the two backs "depends on who's hot, what's going on, the play selection." Parker has had success against the Browns in the past, but the Steelers may not want to overwork him in his first game back. Mendenhall figures to be the more secure bet from a football and a fantasy perspective for Week 6.
Sat. Oct 17, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall will likely start against the Browns, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Willie Parker will make his return to the field as well, but the Steelers have not said how the rotation will be. The carries split between the two depends on how Parker feels and the flow of the game.
Fri. Oct 16, 2009 | STATS
News: Roethlisberger is seeking unspecified counter damages from a woman he says falsely accused him of rape in what his lawyer describes as a plan she hatched to seduce the Steelers quarterback in his Lake Tahoe casino-hotel room.
Impact: The woman alleged in a civil suit filed in Washoe District Court in July that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her at Harrah's in July 2008 after he lured her there under the false pretense of needing his television repaired.
Fri. Oct 16, 2009 | STATS
News: Mendenhall is expected to start against the Browns after returning to practice following a day off with flu-like symptoms.
Impact: Mendenhall went through a full practice on Friday. Mendenhall ran for 165 yards against San Diego and 77 yards against Detroit the last two weeks as Willie Parker sat out with a left big toe injury. Parker practiced all week, but Mendenhall is scheduled to remain the starter.
Fri. Oct 16, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) has practiced all week and will start against the Browns Sunday, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Polamalu will be out there, but he is expected to be wearing a protective brace that will restrict his mobility.
Fri. Oct 16, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker (toe) is listed as probable on the Steelers' Week 6 injury report.
Impact: Rashard Mendenhall practiced fully Friday, so it looks like the Steelers will have both of their top backs available Sunday against a run-friendly Browns' defense. How the carries will be divided is uncertain, and could turn into a "hot-hand" deal, but Mendenhall has been running well, so Parker would need to look pretty spry Sunday to regain the lead role upon his return. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette speculates that Mendenhall will get another start Sunday.
Fri. Oct 16, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall, who returned to practice Friday after missing Thursday with flu-like symptoms, is not listed on the Steelers' Week 6 injury report.
Impact: It remains to be seen how much the return of Willie Parker cuts into his workload, but the Browns have been giving up an average of 170.4 rushing yards per game, which bodes well for Mendenhall's chances to continue to produce this week. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette speculates that Mendenhall will get another start Sunday, despite the anticipated return of Parker.
Fri. Oct 16, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall (illness) returned to practice on Friday and is expected to play Sunday against Cleveland, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: He was sent home early on Thursday due to an illness, but it doesn't look like a major issue. The bigger question is how he'll split carries with Willie Parker, who is expected to return after missing the past two games with turf foe.
Fri. Oct 16, 2009 | RotoWire
News: The Steelers sent Mendenhall home Thursday because of an illness, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: It remains to be seen how quickly he will recover, but offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said that if both Parker (turf toe) and Mendenhall are close to full strength Sunday, it will be a game-time decision as to how the Steelers will deploy them Sunday against the giving Browns' run D.
Fri. Oct 16, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker (toe) is comfortable with the specially-made shoes he has been sporting this week, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: "I'm loving the shoes. I felt better today, most definitely. I feel it's going to be even better tomorrow," he was quoted. He also added that he doesn't know the team's intentions for the rushing attack against the Browns as Rashard Mendenhall missed Thursday's practice due to illness. "Whatever coach decides. He's going to make that decision. That's on coach," Parker added. We'll check back to see if there's a clearer sense of the duo's roles in Week 6 after Friday's practice.
Thu. Oct 15, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Assuming Polamalu (knee) plays in Week 6, he will be sporting a brace that may slow him down, the Associated Press reports.
Impact: The brace may slow him down but will provide protection for the injured knee. Polamalu also admitted he is not exactly 100 percent healthy: "I think another month (of rest) would make a huge difference. The season is short. The season is long when you're healthy, but short when you're injured because you don't have as much rest time." The Steelers are hoping his return will make a huge difference in shoring up some of the deficiencies on the defense since his absence, especially in the fourth quarter.
Thu. Oct 15, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Farrior (elbow, probable) practiced fully Thursday.
Impact: It looks safe to start Farrior Sunday against the Browns if he is one of your IDPs.
Thu. Oct 15, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker (toe) practiced fully again on Thursday, the Steelers' official site reports.
Impact: Parker has been wearing specially designed shoes to protect his injured toe and it seems to be helping, so we'll have to see where he lands on Friday's injury report. In other news, fellow RB Rashard Mendenhall missed practice Thursday due to "illness."
Thu. Oct 15, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Mendenhall (illness) did not practice Thursday, the Steelers' official site reports.
Impact: We'll see where this goes, but it's worth noting that while Mendenhall missed practice, Willie Parker was out there for the second day in a row Thursday.
Thu. Oct 15, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Parker, who has missed the last two games, will wear a special left shoe as he practices this week to protect his turf toe injury, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: He was listed as a full practice participant Wednesday and is expected to play Sunday against the Browns, but while he was away, Rashard Mendenhall made a strong case for an expanded role, so we'd be surprised if Parker saw a huge workload upon his initial return.
Thu. Oct 15, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Holmes said the wrist injury he suffered a few weeks ago is not the issue behind his string of lackluster performances the last few weeks, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: "That had an impact on me dropping those balls in Chicago. But, after that, no. I can't make any excuses...I'm supposed to catch the ball," he was quoted. Holmes leads the Steelers with 41 targets, but is third on the team in receptions with 23. We'll see if he can bounce back against the Browns in Week 6.
Wed. Oct 14, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Farrior (elbow) did not practice Wednesday.
Impact: More on Farrior, who has 28 tackles and a sack through five weeks, in the coming days.
Wed. Oct 14, 2009 | RotoWire
News: Polamalu (knee) was listed as a full participant in practice Wednesday.
Impact: Polamalu, who has missed the past four games, appears on track to play Sunday against the Browns, barring any setbacks.
Wed. Oct 14, 2009 | RotoWire
News: As expected, Parker (toe) was listed as a full participant in practice Wednesday.
Impact: The plan is to see how Parker responds to the work come Thursday after which he will likely be evaluated day-to-day this week, leading up to team's Week 6 tilt against Cleveland.
Wed. Oct 14, 2009 | RotoWire
News: The Steelers have signed Harris to their 53-man roster, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Impact: Harris takes the spot of Aaron Smith, who was placed on injured reserve Wednesday. He does not figure to actually take over Smith's role, as that will be a group effort (Nick Eason, Ziggy Hood and Travis Kirschke), so don't expect much for fantasy purposes.

News: Roethlisberger ranks in the top seven in five major passing categories, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Big Ben currently stands second in passing yards (1,470), seventh in touchdowns (8), second in completions (127), first in completion percentage (73.8) and seventh in QB rating (102.6). The Steelers will look to keep the ground game going in the right direction to try and get a balanced attack, so he may not keep this same pace the course of the season, but there is no denying the offense is revolved around Roethlisberger's arm now.

News: Smith (torn rotator cuff) has been placed on IR, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Smith, who is particularly effective at stopping the run, will likely be replaced by a committee including veterans Travis Kirschke and Nick Eason and No. 1 draft choice Ziggy Hood. While Smith was not racking up big IDP numbers this season -- nine tackles, two sacks -- his loss could be a major blow to the Steelers' run D.

News: Coach Mike Tomlin has not yet decided "the division of labor" between Mendenhall and Willie Parker, KDKA reports.
Impact: Tomlin said "the most important thing in that discussion right now is Willie's availability and the level of his availability." How much of a role Parker can handle will be determined through practice this week, so we'll have to wait a few days to see how big of a role Mendenhall will have in Week 6.

News: The Steelers scrambled on Wednesday to replace Smith, the run-smothering defensive end who was placed on the injured reserve list with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.
Impact: Smith has been to the Pro Bowl only once in 11 seasons and isn't as well-known nationally. But several Steelers said Smith might be the most difficult defensive player to replace because he is so critical not only to stopping the run, but to keeping the line of scrimmage under control for the pass rush to work.

News: Parker (toe) is expected to be a full participant in practice Wednesday, the Steelers' web site reports.
Impact: Coach Mike Tomlin plans to have Parker practice without limitations Wednesday, then see how he responds the following day. He will likely be evaluated day-to-day this week, leading up to Sunday's game against Cleveland.

News: Polamalu (knee) is expected to return to full practice Wednesday, according to the Steelers' web site.
Impact: Coach Mike Tomlin said the plan is for Polamalu to practice without limitations Wednesday, then see how the knee responds the following day. Some good news here as it looks like the team is gearing toward having Polamalu on the field in some capacity against the Browns in Week 6.

News: Smith suffered a shoulder injury in Sunday's game against the Lions, the Steelers' web site reports.
Impact: Coach Mike Tomlin said the injury could "potentially could be significant" and Smith "could definitely be out of this football game (Week 6)." It's also possible Smith will be sidelined longer, but the team won't know until further evaluation is done. A group effort consisting of Nick Eason, Ziggy Hood and Travis Kirschke is expected to be utilized in his absence.

News: Roethlisberger threw a season-high three touchdowns in Pittsburgh's 28-20 win over Detroit on Sunday.
Impact: Roethlisberger got a scare during the game when he was hit low and late, drawing a penalty. "I felt my knee go," he said. "I'm glad there was no weight on it because it wouldn't have been fun."
