News: Grossman says he wants to get back to being a starting NFL quarterback and hopes ``to be thrown into the mix'' with the Washington Redskins. Speaking to reporters at Redskins Park on Thursday, a day after signing a one-year deal, Grossman said he "definitely'' thinks he can be a starter again.
Impact: Grossman said the Redskins did not discuss his role with them, but he is looking at this as ``a stepping stone to the second half'' of his career. Grossman spent last season as a backup to Matt Schaub with the Houston Texans, where he worked with new Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan held the same position with the Texans and now will be an assistant to his father, new Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan.

News: Grossman has signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins.
Impact: Grossman spent last season with the Houston Texans, working with new Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. The 29-year-old Grossman played the previous six seasons with the Chicago Bears, leading them to the Super Bowl after the 2006 season. He has played in 37 NFL games, including 31 starts. He has completed 524 of 971 passes (54 percent) for 6,197 yards, with 33 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. The Redskins released backup quarterback Todd Collins on March 4.

News: Grossman agreed to a one-year contract with the Redskins on Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Impact: Jason Campbell will be back in Washington for another season, but his position as the starter doesn't seem especially secure, especially with a new coaching staff coming in. Grossman has experience with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan from their time together in Houston, so he could theoretically make a push for the job with a strong training camp. Then again, it is Rex Grossman, he of the 69.5 career quarterback rating and 33:36 TD:INT ratio.

News: Portis was present at the start of voluntary workouts on Monday, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Portis has a lot to prove this offseason with a new coaching staff and coming off a serious concussion that forced him to miss eight games. The signing of Larry Johnson also adds competition for touches.
Sat. Mar 13, 2010 | STATS
News: Montgomery has re-signed with the Washington Redskins.
Impact: Montgomery, a restricted free agent, started three games at right guard last season as the Redskins frequently shuffled their lineup due to injuries. The 27-year-old lineman has played in 29 career games with nine starts over four seasons with the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and Redskins. He first signed with Washington in December 2008.
Fri. Mar 12, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Johnson signed a three-year deal with the Redskins on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact: He'll likely complement Clinton Portis heading into the 2010 season, but the way both backs will be used is difficult to predict with Mike Shanahan at the helm. At the least, the Redskins have some insurance for an injury-prone Portis.
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Portis was cleared to begin participating in the Redskins offseason activities by a concussion specialist in Pittsburgh, reports Jason La Canfora of NFL.com.
Impact: Portis will need to impress this spring and summer, possibly to retain his place on the top of the running back depth chart in Washington. The Redskins are actively pursuing free agent options at the position, and new head coach Mike Shannahan has shown in the past that he's more than willing to change things up in the backfield on a whim.
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Johnson is visiting with the Redskins on Thursday, who are very interested in bringing him in as a complement to Clinton Portis, reports the Washington Post.
Impact: Johnson would do very well to sign with the Redskins, as it seems that just about every running back to play under head coach Mike Shanahan has a shot at success. Not that he would return to the epic numbers generated during his prime, but the system would likely bring out the most of whatever is left in Johnson's tank. The interest appears mutual, and Johnson is originally from the D.C. area.
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 | STATS
News: Ryan has signed with the Washington Redskins. Ryan caught 14 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns for the Kansas City Chiefs last season.
Impact: Ryan has 26 catches for 240 yards and those two TDs in six NFL seasons with six teams. The 6-foot-5 Ryan turns 30 on March 27.
Thu. Mar 11, 2010 | RotoWire
News: The Redskins have signed Ryan, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Ryan will earn most of his keep with his ability as a blocking tight end, with pass-catchers Chris Cooley and Fred Davis ahead of him on the depth chart.

News: Free-agent nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu (ma-AH-kay key-moy-AH-too) has signed with the Washington Redskins. Kemoeatu spent last season on injured reserve with the Carolina Panthers after tearing his Achilles tendon in training camp.
Impact: Kemoeatu has 291 tackles and four sacks in 107 NFL games, including 61 starts, with Carolina (2006-09) and Baltimore (2002-05). The 31-year-old Kemoeatu's signing Wednesday represents the latest low-key move in a relatively quiet free agency period so far for Washington under new coach Mike Shanahan and new general manager Bruce Allen. The Redskins signed offensive lineman Artis Hicks on Saturday.
Wed. Mar 10, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Johnson plans to visit the Redskins and Raiders this week, NFL.com's Jason La Canfora reports.
Impact: Both destinations make sense for Johnson. In Washington, he'd have the chance to work with coach Mike Shanahan, who's known for turning running backs nobody else wants into productive contributors. In Oakland, he could step into the role vacated by Justin Fargas, working in three-way timeshare with Michael Bush and Darren McFadden.
Wed. Mar 10, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Kemoeatu (Achilles) signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Redskins on Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Impact: Kemoeatu missed all of 2009 with a torn Achilles tendon he suffered in August, but he must have checked out health-wise for the Redskins to give him a two-year deal. He'll add bulk to the interior of a Washington defensive line that already boasts Albert Haynesworth.
Sat. Mar 6, 2010 | STATS
News: The Washington Redskins have signed their first free agent of 2010, addressing their thin offensive line by adding Hicks.
Impact: Hicks signed a three-year deal Saturday that could be worth as much as $9 million. He can play guard or tackle, and the Redskins need both following the retirement of left tackle Chris Samuels and the release of right guard Randy Thomas. He has spent the last four seasons with Minnesota but has mainly been a backup, starting only 13 games over the last three years.
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 | STATS
News: The Redskins re-signed Williams on Friday.
Impact: Williams, a former No. 4 overall pick by the Buffalo Bills, made a comeback last season after three years away from the game. He made five starts at guard, three at tackle and could be in the running for the starting right guard position following the release of Randy Thomas on Thursday.
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 | STATS
News: The Redskins have re-signed Daniels.
Impact: Daniels, who turned 37 on Thursday, was spared in the purge of veterans on the eve of free agency when the Redskins cut 10 players, including seven who are 30 or older. He made a successful return last season after missing all of 2008 with a knee injury and was rewarded with a two-year contract.
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 | STATS
News: The Redskins have re-signed Alexander.
Impact: Alexander, who has played offensive line, defensive line and special teams, got a three-year deal and will learn yet another new position, working at linebacker in the defense's new 3-4 scheme.
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Kemoeatu (Achilles) has been released by the Panthers, the Charlotte Observer reports.
Impact: With a $2.6 million base salary and a $1.77 million roster bonus that was going to be due on March 14, the Panthers had to release him. Ultimately, he could return on a smaller contract, as the interest in acquiring his services may be limited after he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on the first day of training camp.
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 | STATS
News: The Panthers released Kemoeatu on Friday.
Impact: The Panthers are at the start of a youth movement.
Fri. Mar 5, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Daniels agreed to two-year contract extension with the Redskins on Friday, ESPN.com reports.
Impact: Daniels received a signing bonus of $250,000 and will make $912,000 in 2010 and $1 million on 2011.
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Thomas (triceps) will be released by the Redskins, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: A triceps tear ended Thomas' 2009 season early, but health permitting, he'll likely get a chance to bolster some other team's line in 2010.
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Smoot has been released by the Redskins, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Smoot, who played mostly in nickel packages in 2009, figures to catch on with some team looking to add an experienced cornerback.
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Betts (knee) has been released by the Redskins, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Betts landed on IR this past season after tearing his ACL and MCL in Week 11, so he's probably going to need to re-establish his health before there's much of a market for him.
Thu. Mar 4, 2010 | RotoWire
News: The Redskins will release Cartwright, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Due to injuries to Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts, Cartwright saw more work than expected in the Redskins' backfield in 2009 and at age 30, he should still have enough left in the tank to contribute somewhere as a kick returner/backup RB.
Wed. Mar 3, 2010 | STATS
News: A person familiar with the decision says the Washington Redskins have put a first-round tender on restricted free agent Campbell. The tender is worth about $3.1 million, the person told The Associated Press, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the move hasn't been announced by the team.
Impact: New Redskins coach Mike Shanahan had said he would tender Campbell but hasn't committed to him as his starter.Campbell has started 52 games in his five seasons with the Redskins. He has his best statistical season last year, but the team struggled and finished 4-12.
Wed. Mar 3, 2010 | RotoWire
News: The Redskins used a second-round tender on Heyer, a restricted free agent, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: Heyer wasn't especially effective for Washington, but the team is in such bad need of depth on the offensive line that he'll stick around by default.
Wed. Mar 3, 2010 | RotoWire
News: The Redskins used a first-round tender on Campbell, a restricted free agent, ESPN reports.
Impact: It's believed that Dan Snyder was itching to replace Campbell last year, and that isn't likely to have changed. Snyder won't leave the Redskins without options, however, so keeping Campbell around for one more season is a good idea in case Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen either don't impress Mike Shanahan or if both players get drafted ahead of Washington's fourth overall pick. The latter scenario isn't especially likely.
Wed. Mar 3, 2010 | STATS
News: Six-time Pro Bowl left tackle Samuels will announce his retirement Thursday.
Impact: The announcement has been expected. Samuels hasn't played since banging heads with a defensive player Oct. 11 in a game against the Carolina Panthers. The collision left him with a neck injury, and doctors advised him the risk was too great to try to play again. For many years, Samuels played with a condition called stenosis, a narrowing of the spine. He always wore a large brace behind his neck while on the field.
Tue. Mar 2, 2010 | RotoWire
News: In a recent interview with Sirius NFL Radio, coach Mike Shanahan said that "Clinton Portis is our running back," the CSNwashington.com reports.
Impact: The report also suggests that all this really firms up is that Portis will not be released prior to the start of free agency. Portis will still need to work hard in the team's offseason conditioning program to stay in good graces with Shanahan and given the mileage he's racked up, it wouldn't surprise us if the Redskins draft/sign some competition for their veteran back in the coming months.
Mon. Mar 1, 2010 | RotoWire
News: Samuels plans to retire because of a severe neck injury, the Washington Post reports.
Impact: This news underscores the need for the Redskins to revamp their O-line as they head into the Mike Shanahan era.
