Niedermayer made his debut in 1991 with the New Jersey Devils after the team drafted him the previous spring in the first round, third overall.

In his last NHL playoff run with the Ducks in 2009, Niedermayer battled Johan Franzen of the Red Wings. Anaheim lost to Detroit in seven games in the conference semifinals.

Niedermayer, a native of British Columbia, captained Team Canada to the Olympic gold medal on February 28, 2010 in Vancouver.

Niedermayer battled Ryan Johnson of the Vancouver Canucks and other tough foes in his final NHL season, but the Ducks didn't make the playoffs for the first time since Niedermayer joined them.

"I couldn't have asked to be part of two better organizations than the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks," said Niedermayer, who finished with 172 goals and 568 assists.
