| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633518 | Opening the books | Opening+the+books | NHL | When the Edmonton Oilers' Sam Gagner got within two of Darryl Sittler's single-game record of 10 points on Feb. 2, we got to thinking about which marks would stand the test of time. We could fill an entire list with Wayne Gretzky records that appear to be unbreakable, but we tried to limit "The Great One's" appearances here. And who knows? If Sidney Crosby ever gets healthy, maybe he can make a run at some of Gretzky's records. Maybe. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633514 | Tiger Williams' 3,966 penalty minutes | Tiger+Williams%27+3%2C966+penalty+minutes | NHL | Williams (shown here during his stint with the Los Angeles Kings) patrolled NHL rinks for 14 years with stops on both sides of the border and on both coasts. He accumulated more than 300 penalty minutes six times in his career, and was over 290 on three other occasions. A glance at the top 25 career PIM leaders shows no active players on the list, so the record appears to be safe for some time. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633511 | Paul Coffey's 48 goals by a defenseman | Paul+Coffey%27s+48+goals+by+a+defenseman | NHL | The only two defensemen to score 40 or more goals in a season are Coffey and the man who revolutionized the position, Bobby Orr. Only one active defenseman has scored more than 30 in a year when the Capitals' Mike Green scored 31 in 2008-09. That was the only time he's cracked the 20-goal mark, let alone 30. So, 48 looks to be pretty safe for the time being. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633512 | Dave Schultz's 472 PIM in a season | Dave+Schultz%27s+472+PIM+in+a+season++ | NHL | It was a different NHL when "The Hammer" and his Broadstreet Bullies teammates were terrorizing opponents. The Flyers beat any team they could into submission with Schultz leading the way. To gain some perspective, only one player even cracked 300 penalty minutes in the past three seasons when Zenon Konopka, now with the Senators, led the league with 307 last year with the Islanders. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633508 | Darryl Sittler's 10 points in a game | Darryl+Sittler%27s+10+points+in+a+game | NHL | Sam Gagner scored eight points for the Oilers on Feb. 2, becoming the first player to hit the eight-point mark since 1988, and 13th (including playoffs) to come that close to Sittler's record since he set it on Feb. 7, 1976. But those two points that would tie the record are a big two points to overcome, let alone break it. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633519 | Glenn Hall's 502 consecutive games in goal | Glenn+Hall%27s+502+consecutive+games+in+goal | NHL | While Gordie Howe is known as "Mr. Hockey," Hall is known as "Mr. Goalie." He played in a time when coaches didn't give their franchise goalies a rest. If he was healthy enough to skate, he'd be between the pipes. Granted, seasons were only 70 games long back when Hall played in the 1950s and '60s (he actually played until 1971 after making his NHL debut in 1952-53), but few goalies play that many games a year in this era, and none of them do it without getting a night off here and there. Hall's streak began in his first full season with the Red Wings in 1955-56 and continued with Chicago after he was traded there at the end of the 1956-57 season. It was finally snapped on Nov. 8, 1962, when he finally was sidelined with back problems. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633509 | Joe Malone's seven goals in one game | Joe+Malone%27s+seven+goals+in+one+game | NHL | While a lot of players have scored five goals in a game (most recently, the Red Wings' Johan Franzen did so on Feb. 2, 2011), nobody's scored more than that since Darryl Sittler's six-goal (and 10-point) effort on Feb. 7, 1976. Malone is the only one to score seven, and he did it over 90 years ago (Jan. 31, 1920). If nobody's done it in that long, that's a record that appears to be safe. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633517 | Wayne Gretzky's 215 points in a season | Wayne+Gretzky%27s+215+points+in+a+season | NHL | Gretzky is the only player in NHL history to score over 200 points in a season, and he did it four times, peaking at 215 in 1985-86. One of the remarkable things about that year is that it was not the same season in which he scored a record 92 goals. In fact, he scored just 52 that season with a whopping 163 assists (also a record). The only player who ever came close to 200 points is Mario Lemiuex, who fell just short with 199 in 76 games in 1988-89. The next highest point total by a player besides Gretzky or Lemiuex is the 155 points Steve Yzerman scored, also in 1988-89. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633516 | Montreal's 24 Stanley Cups | Montreal%27s+24+Stanley+Cups | NHL | No team comes close to the 24 Stanley Cup banners hanging from the rafters in Montreal. The Toronto Maple Leafs are second with 13 Cups, but they haven't won one since 1967. The Red Wings are next with 11. It would take quite a run for either team to make up ground on the Canadiens. In today's NHL, with more parity and more teams competing for the Cup every year, that's seemingly impossible. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633513 | Bill Mosienko's three goals in 21 seconds | Bill+Mosienko%27s+three+goals+in+21+seconds | NHL | When the Rangers hosted the Blackhawks on the last game of the regular season in 1952, with neither team going to the playoffs, just more than 4,000 fans made their way to Madison Square Garden. But if any of them went to the bathroom during the third period — heck, even if they turned their head for a minute — they might've missed Mosienko potting three goals in 21 seconds. The closest anyone has come since was when Jean Beliveau scored a hat trick in 44 seconds in 1955. |

| NHL | 142 | 1580 | Top 10 unbreakable NHL records | 30633510 | Wayne Gretzky's 2,857 career points | Wayne+Gretzky%27s+2%2C857+career+points | NHL | Gretzky's career point total is almost 1,000 higher than the man in second place on the list: former Edmonton teammate Mark Messier. The thing that stands out about Gretzky's career totals are that he has more career assists (1,963) than Messier has goals and assists combined (1,887). Oh, and Gretzky also owns the career mark for goals (894). |
