NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566047 Ottawa Senators Ottawa+Senators NHL Management got an early start on their roster overhaul, shipping out veterans Mike Fisher, Chris Kelly, Jarkko Ruutu, Chris Campoli and Alex Kovalev for draft picks, and will be auditioning recently acquired Craig Anderson from Colorado as their starting goalie. Most on the roster will also be playing for jobs next season as the Senators play out the string while the best their fans can look forward to is perhaps their club finishing low enough in the standings to get a favorable spot in the draft lottery. NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566046 New York Islanders New+York+Islanders NHL Mocked for much of the season and with no chance the make the playoffs, the Islanders nevertheless appear to be rounding into a decent team as this season winds down. Thanks to contributions by reclamation projects like Michael Grabner, P.A. Parenteau, Matt Moulson and Al Montoya, the Isles had a winning record in February (8-5-1), beating or narrowly losing to playoff contenders. It might not mean much, but it gives their fans hope for next season. NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29561056 Florida Panthers Florida+Panthers NHL With the playoffs out of reach, management commenced its rebuilding process at the trade deadline, dealing away Bryan McCabe, Dennis Wideman, Radek Dvorak, Chris Higgins and Bryan Allen. Faced with missing the postseason for an NHL record 10th straight season, Panthers fans have little to look forward to except yet another summer roster overhaul and more promise that, this time, this current front office group will get it right. In the meantime they should enjoy watching starting goalie Tomas Vokoun while they can, as he's likely gone this summer via free agency. NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566045 New Jersey Devils New+Jersey+Devils NHL At midseason, the Devils were more than 25 points out of a playoff berth and no one gave them a chance. Two months later, they were only eight points out and one of the hottest teams in the league. Thanks to the return of Jacques Lemaire as head coach and led by a revitalized Ilya Kovalchuk (who had six game-winning goals in 12 games), the Devils have staged an amazing run that has players and fans believing they still have a chance to make the postseason. It's a long shot, but one has to admire their never-say-die attitude. NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29561055 Atlanta Thrashers Atlanta+Thrashers NHL After a decent first half had them in playoff contention, the Thrashers wobbled in January and have been in free-fall in the standings since early February, sliding from eight overall to 11th, seven points out of a berth. Despite strong performances from Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Ondrej Pavelec and Tobias Enstrom, the Thrashers have lived dangerously on defense all season. Currently they have the third-worst penalty kill, have given up the third-most goals-against per game and the second-most shots against per game. Their poor defensive play has placed their playoff hopes in jeopardy. Joel Auerbach - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/01/05/GYI0062950265_20110105204327943_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/01/05/GYI0062950265_20110105204327943_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29563283 Toronto Maple Leafs Toronto+Maple+Leafs NHL Despite a 6-6-1 record in January, management had apparently seen enough and commenced its offseason rebuild, shipping out Francois Beauchemin, Tomas Kaberle and Kris Versteeg before the February trade deadline. But a funny thing happened to the Leafs. Instead of getting worse, they actually played better, going 8-2-4 in February to climb within striking distance of a playoff berth. They still face a tough fight with Buffalo, Carolina and the Rangers, but they've given themselves a chance, providing what should be a thrilling finish for a season many fans had expected was lost. NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566049 Carolina Hurricanes Carolina+Hurricanes NHL After being mired in ninth place for much of the season, the Hurricanes rode an 8-4-2 record in January into eighth overall but have played .500 hockey since the All-Star break and were recently overtaken by the Buffalo Sabres. Offense hasn't been their problem this season -- they currently have the eighth-best goals-per-game average. But it's been another matter defensively as they have the ninth-worst penalty kill, have given up the sixth-most goals and the most shots against per game. Goalie Cam Ward's been doing his best, but he needs more help from his teammates if they're to make the playoffs. Len Redkoles - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-9_20110307132500119_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-9_20110307132500119_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566050 Buffalo Sabres Buffalo+Sabres NHL The Sabres have slowly but surely recovered from a poor start to this season, overcoming the loss of forward Derek Roy to what could be a season-ending leg injury, to claw back into playoff contention. Rather than becoming "sellers" at the trade deadline, management actually were "buyers," bringing in scorer Brad Boyes to bolster their offense. Since being taken over by new owner Terry Pegula, the Sabres appear to be a different team -- as though a huge weight is off their shoulders. Ultimately, however, their hopes will rest upon over-worked Ryan Miller to provide the strong goaltending necessary to hang onto a playoff spot. Graig Abel - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-8_20110307132500118_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-8_20110307132500118_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566051 New York Rangers New+York+Rangers NHL The Rangers exceeded expectations for most of this season thanks to goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, young Rangers like Marc Staal, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan and Derek Stepan, and the coaching of John Tortorella. But the team has been struggling since the All-Star break. Compounding their problems was the absence of star forward Marian Gaborik for several games to a concussion, though he recently returned to action. The addition of defenseman Bryan McCabe should juice a stagnant power play, but with the Hurricanes, Sabres and Maple Leafs nipping at their heels, the Blueshirts need a strong effort down the stretch to make the playoffs. Mitchell Layton - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-7_20110307132500120_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-7_20110307132500120_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29563282 Montreal Canadiens Montreal+Canadiens NHL Despite a blueline devastated by injury and a lack of scoring punch, the Canadiens continue to hold down a playoff berth. Credit their solid team defense, the performance of call-ups like forwards Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais, and the additions via trades of blueliners Jame Wisniewski and Brent Sopol. But the prime reason is goaltender Carey Price, who has silenced his critics with numbers that rank him among the league's goalie leaders. Barring a late-season meltdown, Price should carry the Habs to the playoffs. Scott Cunningham - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-6_20110307132500116_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-6_20110307132500116_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566044 Tampa Bay Lightning Tampa+Bay+Lightning NHL Expectations that the Lightning would falter in the second half failed to materialize as they remain among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. GM Steve Yzerman stabilized his goaltending with a midseason acquisition of Dwayne Roloson and dealt for Eric Brewer to add more experience to his defense. But scoring depth remains an issue beyond Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis. They're doing well enough now to make the playoffs, but they'll need more contributions from other forwards, including Vincent Lecavalier, if they harbor hopes of a lengthy playoff run. Rich Lam - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2010/12/12/GYI0062787278_20101212122123732_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2010/12/12/GYI0062787278_20101212122123732_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566043 Pittsburgh Penguins Pittsburgh+Penguins NHL Despite losing superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to injuries, the Penguins continue to hang on to fourth overall in the Eastern Conference. They've been playing slightly better than .500 hockey over the past month, but the absence of their two best players remains keenly felt. Management added James Neal and Alex Kovalev to bolster their scoring while the club overall continues to eke out points playing a more close checking game. It's unlikely the Penguins will fall out of the playoff picture but without Crosby and Malkin, their chances for another Stanley Cup run aren't good. Graig Abel - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/02/27/GYI0063704305_20110227031001809_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/02/27/GYI0063704305_20110227031001809_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29561057 Washington Capitals Washington+Capitals NHL They've recovered well from a midseason slump to climb back into third overall, but the Capitals remain a far cry from the dominant force of a year ago. Offensive production remains a problem, particularly for scoring stars Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and Mike Green, whose numbers are all down significantly compared to last season. Compounding the problem is a lack of offensive support elsewhere in the lineup, though recent additions Jason Arnott, Marco Sturm and Dennis Wideman should help. While they're playing better heading into the stretch, fans remain uneasy about their chances for a Cup run. Gregory Shamus - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-3_20110307132500115_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/03/07/030711-NHL-Photo-Gallery-SW-3_20110307132500115_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29561054 Boston Bruins Boston+Bruins NHL By acquiring defenseman Tomas Kaberle and forwards Chris Kelly and Rich Peverley, Bruins management signalled they're loading up for a run at the Stanley Cup this season. Since January, they've already been among the better teams in the league, and their recent roster additions should only improve their overall defensive game. That should also ease some of the workload for starting goalie Tim Thomas, which will be necessary to keep him fresh for the playoffs. With the conference-leading Flyers now struggling, the surging Bruins are poised to challenge for the top spot overall. Dave Sandford - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/02/23/GYI0063637276_20110223120736142_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2011/02/23/GYI0063637276_20110223120736142_107_80.JPG
NHL 142 43 NHL Eastern Conference playoff projections 29566052 Philadelphia Flyers Philadelphia+Flyers NHL They've dominated the Eastern Conference for most of this season but lately, the Flyers have been mired in a slump, winning only two of their last eight games entering this week. Although the Flyers rank among the top scoring teams in the league, they've had trouble finding the back of the net, especially on the power play. Concern has also been raised about their goaltending, especially rookie Sergei Bobrovsky, who appears to be struggling latley. With the Boston Bruins now challenging them for first overall, the Flyers are facing a true test of their mettle as the playoffs approach.
