Goalie Antti Niemi has been solid between the pipes, their defensive game has significantly improved, forwards Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau and Devin Setoguchi have regained their scoring form, and rookie sensation Logan Couture has played a strong two-way game. At their current pace, the Sharks should have little difficulty finishing among the top clubs in the West. If the defending champs continue playing this way, it could keep them among the top four teams in the West. Led by team captain Jarome Iginla and goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, the Flames have been red-hot since February, going 12-3-3 to move into a tie for fourth overall with Chicago. Despite the loss of veteran center Brendan Morrison indefinitely to a knee injury, the Flames have shown no signs of a letdown heading into the season's final month. One reason for the improvement was the addition of two-way blueliner Alex Goligoski, who had six points in his first seven games while providing the Stars with the skilled puck-moving defenseman their offensive game had been lacking for some time. The return of star center Brad Richards from injury could go a long way toward the Stars finally nailing down a playoff berth. But while he had three points in his first four games, his addition has so far done little to improve the Kings. For a club with so much good young talent, which showed so much promise of becoming a Cup contender earlier this season, the Kings continue to struggle offensively (currently 21st overall in goals-per-game), which will likely keep them battling down to the wire for a playoff berth. Still, there is some cause for concern heading into mid-March. After reeling off eight consecutive victories in mid-February, the Coyotes have won only once in their last seven games as of March 9. Injuries have been a factor of late with Ed Jovanovski, Derek Morris, Ray Whitney and Martin Hanzal currently out of the lineup. With five other clubs nipping at their heels, they must regain their winning ways soon or risk tumbling out of postseason contention. Management searched in vain for help before the trade deadline. Now they'll look to hold the fort until Koivu's return as well as hope winger Guillaume Latendresse, back in action for the first time in months, rounds back into the promising offensive form he displayed last season. They'll need veterans like Martin Havlat, Andrew Brunette and Matt Cullen to step up in Koivu's absence if they're to remain in the playoff hunt. They've only managed to score more than two goals per game in that period three times (coincidentally the three games they won in that period). Management was unsuccessful in its attempts to add more offense at the Feb. 28 trade deadline, meaning one of the lowest scoring teams in the league will have to look to within to address that problem. Dan Ellis, recently acquired from Tampa Bay, has done a good job in relief, but it remains to be seen if he can provide the strong goaltending the Ducks need to make a serious push for the postseason. They must also pick up their offensive game, as currently the Ducks are near the bottom of the league in goals per game (including goals-scored on even strength) and shots. Still, with only a handful of points separating the 11th place Ducks from fourth overall in the tight Western Conference, they're remain very much in the race. A lack of quality depth at center and defense has hampered the Blue Jackets throughout the season, as well as inconsistent goaltending from Steve Mason and Mathieu Garon. Expect management to consider some significant roster changes if the Jackets fail to make the postseason, but don't expect any of them to involve team captain Rick Nash. While management continues to preach patience with their rebuilding program, fans and media have become critical over the lack of progress. A four-player swap with St. Louis for winger Chris Stewart and puck-moving defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk should help going forward, but it appears the Blues could benefit from more experience in the roster. It remains to be seen, however, what moves management will make to address this issue in the offseason. As the Avalanche play out the string, management will evaluate the roster, which could see further shakeups in the offseason, particularly to improve their goaltending and defense, which were their main problem areas this season. Those odds were improved when potential rookie of the year candidate Taylor Hall was sidelined for the season with a high-ankle sprain. Despite another disappointing season, Oilers fans have cause to hope for the future, given the play of Hall and fellow youngsters Jordan Eberle, Linus Omark and Magnus Paajarvi. Management will have considerable cap space this summer, which could be used to bolster their lineup via trades or free agency.
