Red Wings win the Stanley Cup
The 2008 Stanley Cup Final featured the most dominant team in the league in the Detroit Red Wings against the rising talent of the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was a classic matchup of established stars like Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk (holding Cup) against youthful stars like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury, resulting in the best ratings for a Stanley Cup Final in years. The Wings' experience and puck-possession system ultimately won out over the youth and exuberance of the Penguins, but not before Pittsburgh made it interesting by rallying back in Game 5 to force a closely contested sixth game in Pittsburgh. Lidstrom became the first European to captain a team to the Stanley Cup, and Zetterberg only the second European to win the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP. -- Spector
