With the 2007-08 NHL regular season now history, it's time to take a look back at the best and worst trade and free agent moves of the past year.

Last summer saw Daniel Briere, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Jason Blake, Paul Kariya, Mathieu Schneider, Brian Rafalski and Ryan Smyth sign lucrative long-term contracts as unrestricted free agents.

Briere earned $10 million with the Flyers (the cap hit was only $6.5 million) for this season, in which he had a respectable 72-point performance, but considering his salary more was expected from him.

Gomez also earned $10 million this season, of which the cap hit for the Rangers was $7.137 million. He led the Rangers in scoring with 70 points but his production should've been higher to justify that salary.

He at least gave the Rangers better value for their dollar than his teammate Drury, who was third in team scoring with 57 points while earning $7.050 million. Drury's leadership and two-way play weren't worth that much money.

The same goes for Smyth, who made $7.5 million with Colorado this season. Yes, he was hampered by injury this season, but even healthy he's not worth that salary.

At least Briere, Gomez, Drury and Smyth helped their new teams make the playoffs, unlike Kariya and Blake.

Kariya earned $6 million this season with the Blues and Blake $4 million with the Maple Leafs but neither played up to their respective salaries this season. Kariya had only 16 goals and 62 points, while Blake, a 40-goal scorer last season, managed only 15 goals.

Of the top UFA signings last summer the best was Schneider's with Anaheim and Rafalski's with Detroit.

The 38-year-old Schneider had 39 points in 62 games and his plus-minus of +20 was among the best in the league, making him well worth his $5.5 million salary this season.

Rafalski's performance was more impressive. His 55 points ranked among the top ten in points for defensemen and his plus-minus of +27 was third-best in the league, making him worthy of his $6 million salary.

Michael Nylander and Sheldon Souray also signed expensive long-term contracts with the Washington Capitals and Edmonton Oilers respectively, but injuries sidelined them for much of this season. Their new clubs will have to wait until next season to determine their true worth.

The most under-rated free agent signing was defenseman Roman Hamrlik's four-year, $5.5 million per season contract with the Montreal Canadiens.

Dismissed as a waste of money, Hamrlik brought stability and experience to the Canadiens' blueline and was a significant reason for their improvement this season.

The worst UFA signing was forward Michal Handzus' four-year, $16 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings.

Handzus was expected to be a strong two-way forward but in 81 games netted only 21 points and his plus-minus of -19 ranked among the worst in the NHL, not what Kings management had in mind when they signed him.

Sometimes the best deal a team can make is retaining a top player.

Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk, Anaheim's J.S. Giguere, Montreal's Andrei Markov, and Toronto's Mats Sundin were eligible for UFA status last summer but opted to re-sign with their respective teams.

Datsyuk led Detroit in scoring and ranked amongst the league's leading scorers. Giguere had another solid season in goal for Anaheim. Markov was Montreal's best all-around defenseman and Sundin was one of the few bright spots on a moribund Toronto team.

The best UFA bang for the buck was the Nashville Predators' signing of goaltender Dan Ellis.

A minor leaguer in the Dallas Stars system prior to signing with the Predators, Ellis was among the league leaders in save percentage and shutouts this season, wresting the starter's job away from Chris Mason in the process.

Ellis was arguably the main reason the Predators made the 2008 playoffs, and all it cost them this season was $500,000.

The Edmonton Oilers made headlines last summer by successfully signing restricted free agent winger Dustin Penner from the Anaheim Ducks with an offer sheet.

Penner's $4.25 million per season salary made him the Oilers highest paid player, but after he finished fourth in team scoring with 23 goals, 47 points with a plus-minus of -12 it appears the Oilers overpaid for his services.

Buffalo's Thomas Vanek was also an offer sheet target of the Oilers, costing the Sabres over $7 million per season for seven years to retain him.

Had Vanek matched or exceeded his 84-point campaign of a year ago it would've been considered money well spent, but his disappointing 62-point performance this season had critics suggesting the Sabres grossly overpaid to keep him.

Both players still have considerable time remaining on their contracts to justify their salaries.

The salary cap significantly reduced trade activity this season, limiting the bulk of player movement to the February 26th trade deadline.

Of the 25 trades made at the deadline those made by the Washington Capitals and San Jose Sharks brought the most immediate rewards.

The Capitals' acquisitions of Cristobal Huet, Sergei Fedorov and Matt Cooke provided the young roster with a much-needed boost of experience and leadership, helping the young club make the post-season for the first time in five years.

The Sharks' addition of puck-moving blueliner Brian Campbell spurred them into a strong finish where they lost only once in regulation in their final 22 games.

Marian Hossa and Brad Richards were the biggest names on the move at the trade deadline, dealt to Pittsburgh and Dallas respectively.

Hossa was injured immediately after joining the Penguins but had 10 points in 11 games upon his return, which bodes well for his helping the Pens to a lengthy playoff run.

Richards has had a tougher adjustment with Dallas, for while he's had 11 points in 12 games with the Stars, five of those was in his first game. His presence did little to bolster a Stars team that struggled down the stretch.

No talk of Sykora signing with the Pens? He only costs $2.5 million a year. That's a hell of a deal.

Poor Ducks. For most of the year it looked like the pick they were going to get from the Penner deal was going to be around 5. Thanks to a late run by Big Oil, that pick fell all the way to number 12. That's still a nice trade for a guy like Penner, but it still has to hurt just a little.

This is a pretty poor article on your part spector in my opinion. First of all why is everyone hating on Briere? He was the centerpiece of a team that finished deadlast a year ago. His 72 points should be considered outstanding since his main job was to play WITH Gagne and set him up. Guess what Gagne didn't play all year Richards went down with injury and somehow the Flyers made playoffs.

I also think that Kariya deserves a LOT more love than you are giving him. He signed for 6 mill and everyone knew that St. Louis overpaid, but that was to land a quality player and bring him into a non hockey market and try to make it respectable. Not only did he do that but did you see how many goals Boyes scored this year? Did you take notice of who set Boyes up? Thats right Kariya. Without Kariya I bet Boyes is around the 25-30 goal mark.

What did Vanek put up 39 goals? Thats not too shabby especially after a terrible start to the season where the Sabres were still wallowing in self pity.

Don't forget to mention that not only is Penner making 4.25, he also cost a first round pick and 2 second rounders. Steep price.

Hey Spec. Didn't you pick the Canadiens to finish last. Wrong again.

Hey Hyde. Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg make less money than Chris Drury. They are better defensively, and they put up 80+ points per year. That is why Drury is not worth his $7 million+.

Spector,

I know this is a column about notable UFA signings, which is why I asked about Hamrlik not Campbell. If you're going to mention Hamrlik as a good signing for the Habs, then how can you ignore Rivet who brought stability and experience to a young SJ blueline, and even had more points. In fact, the Habs wouldn't have needed to sign Hamrlik if they hadn't traded Rivet to the Sharks in the first place. Maybe they thought Rivet would resign with them when his rental stay was over. Unfortunatley for the Habs, Rivet loved playing in SJ so much more then hockey mad Montreal, that SJ was the only team he tried to sign with. Plus, considering what he brought to the team, they got him at a bargain. I have a feeling that Campbell is noticing the same thing Rivet did last year, even though I know you're hoping for Campbell to leave.

I am hoping the most important point of this article is not lost on the GM's. Throwing money at big name players ends in more disappointments than success. GM's must spend smarter. The NHL salary is reaching the same level as pre-lockout. I don't want another work stoppage. Stop the insanity.

worst free agent non signing was not resigning Chris Drury... the sabres needed him... not Briere, not Vanek, not Campbell.... Drury, a hockey GOD as buccigrass would say.

Hi Spector,

How can you have the Huet deal lost in the middle of these signings???

Without a doubt, this was the best trade deadline move -- mad Alex scoring and lights out Huet tending carried the Caps into the playoffs (and a division crown) with an amazing winning streak.

What's wrong -- you don't want to bring it up due the good scare you Habs fans must of had seeing the possibility of a Mont-Wash first round matchup with only a couple of games to go??

Just kidding around -- but seriously, would you consider the Huet move the most significant of all you listed?

Hey Spector,

For bargins what about the blackhawks signings of robert lang and brent sopel?

Lang may have had only 54 points but most of his points came in close games or were game change plus as mentor to the young players he was key.

Sopel brought his game back from the dead and was also key to there playoff run.

I know they didnt make it to the playoffs but you have to give them some credit for low budget moves. Along with young players they were keys to this year's turn around for the Blackhawks.

After tonight's tilt against the Desert Dogs, Mathieu Schneider finishes the season with a +22. Twelve G's, 27 A's and a not-too-damaging 50 PIMs, in 65 games.

Looks like Penner took the money and ran. Twenty-three goals for $4.25M/year. Anaheim paid him less than a mil to score tweny-nine.

Burke calculated his risks and came out ahead (for the time being). Giguere's sports hernia surgery just before the season opened allow for JS to be healthier and more reliable, and to let Bryz's cap hit move on to PHO.

Ahh, if only Kariya had picked a winner...like the Preds! Ah well, it'll give him more time to work on his putting.

Spector you noted the deal of the Summer (bang for the buck) in the UFA catagory as Ellis for the Preds. Agreed, GM Poile is one of the best at that. You missed the trade deadline most bang for the buck and it is again GM Poile and the Nashville Preds. Most years we have one of the top ones in this catagory. (Last year's Forsberg fiasco aside) Of course i am refering to the well known Jan Hlavac traded from Tampa Bay for a 7th round draft pick. (originally drafted NY Islanders' 2nd round choice, 28th overall, in 1995). He is currently 14 points in 18 games (8 in the last 9 games) with a plus 9. He worked his way to the First line and continues to excel. I do not know of a more bang for the buck anywhere in the league.

CJ
