Linesmen won't get the drop on Sharp

A lot of strange things happen over the course of an NHL season, but the Blackhawks are still shaking their heads about an incident during their just-concluded three-game trip.

In the third period of Thursday night's 2-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, a lineman's decision may have helped determine the outcome.

With the game tied 1-1, the teams lined up for a faceoff in the Hawks' zone. With Colorado's Philippe Dupuis at the dot waiting for Patrick Sharp to join him, the linesman dropped the puck. Colorado took it and forced the attack, during which Hawks defenseman Matt Walker committed a hooking penalty as he tried to catch up to the play. Wojtek Wolski scored the winning goal on the ensuing power play.

Coach Joel Quenneville called it "a homer drop" after the game.

"I didn't feel like I did anything out of the ordinary," Sharp said. "I was ready to take the draw, and I was talking to (teammate Colin) Fraser about what we were going to do. The next thing I know they were shooting the puck on the net.

"I thought maybe a warning could have been issued or maybe just blow the whistle and tell us to hurry up, but the [linesman] decided to drop the puck. He even said afterward he probably could have done things differently. I guess there are no excuses. I have to be ready to take the draw."

Sharp said being ready won't be a problem the rest of the season.

"Especially in the [defensive] zone, I'll be there every time,"

One-timers: Dustin Byfuglien will join Jesse Rogers for a live broadcast on WSCR-AM 670 from 8-10 p.m. Monday at Buffalo Wild Wings, 1023 Brook Forest Ave., Shorewood. ... Bears legend Dick Butkus attended Sunday night's game and mingled with Hawks players after the game.
