On my shelf: Atlantans talk about their favorite books
by TOM SABULIS; Staff , The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I'm reading a Swedish book, the story of the Swedish mafia. It's never been talked about much except by criminologists in Sweden.
What's the book called?
"Swedish Mafia."
Do you read in English as well as Swedish?
I read in both languages. Last year I read mostly books in English; a few Swedish books.
What kind of books do you like?
I started out reading mostly history books, books about Swedish history. Now I'm more into historical fiction.
Sports books, too?
No, not really. I did when I was young, but not lately. I like history and criminal stories.
Do you have more time to read during the season or the off-season?
During the season, I have a lot of time on the road, mostly on the planes, in hotels, on buses.
Do the other Thrashers read much?
A few guys are reading, but a lot of guys are playing video games and cards. The reading bunch is a minority right now.
Do you ever read to unwind after a tough game?
Yeah, I do. Sometimes it's the first thing I do when I get home or back to the hotel.
Do you ever listen to audio books?
No, I just read the books. I'm afraid with audio, I'd get mesmerized by that.
What's the first book you ever read?
I know in my early teens I liked an Alfred Hitchcock series. I think it was called "Three Detectives." I think he actually wrote them.
What has really stood out with you lately?
I liked "Angels & Demons" over "The Da Vinci Code," but both [by Dan Brown] were phenomenal. I think "Angels and Demons" was a little better.
I bet you read the Swedish thriller, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"?
The [Stieg] Larsson book? Oh, his books are great. I can't wait for the next one to come out. ["The Girl Who Played With Fire" is due in July].
