ESPN hockey analyst Barnaby arrested

Former Buffalo Sabre forward Matthew Barnaby, currently an ESPN and TSN hockey analyst, pleaded not guilty Saturday after being arrested for his involvement in a domestic incident in Amherst, N.Y., The Buffalo News reported.

The 38-year-old pleaded not guilty in Amherst Town Court to five charges, including criminal mischief, criminal trespass, harassment, criminal contempt and aggravated harassment after the incident at a house in Getzville, N.Y., Friday evening.

According to the News, the most serious charge -- felony criminal mischief -- carries a possible prison sentence of up to four years.

Police said they were called to the scene shortly after 6 pm and found serious damage to the property. The incident reportedly involved Barnaby's estranged wife and a female friend.

Law enforcement officials told the News that the incident did not involve any physical contact and there were no injuries.

The former Sabre was jailed overnight and released Saturday morning.

Following a 12-minute arraignment hearing, Amherst Town Justice Mark G. Farrell released the former NHL pugilist on his own recognizance.

"Mr. Barnaby, it goes without question that you [must] completely stay away from anyone involved in this matter," Farrell said.

Born in Ottawa, Ont., Barnaby played for the Sabres from 1992 to 1999 before leaving for Pittsburgh in March 1999.

He went on to play with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars before retiring in 2007.

In a career of 834 NHL games, he scored 113 goals and accumulated 2,562 penalty minutes.
