Frustrated Sens could file grievance with league

The Dany Heatley situation could get a lot messier. The Ottawa Senators have paid a $4 million (all figures U.S.) bonus to the disgruntled winger, as per the July 1 deadline, but find themselves flummoxed by Heatley's request to be traded and his reluctance to waive his no-trade clause. The possibility exists, however, that the Senators could file some kind of grievance against their star player. "They believe that his conduct has damaged the club," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Star in an email last night. "What, if anything, they decide to do is ultimately up to the Senators ." If the threat is a pressure tactic to get Heatley to waive his no-trade, it is a flawed one, said NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly. "The league is grasping at straws and would be on shaky legal ground if it pursued a grievance against Dany," Kelly said. The Edmonton Oilers had proposed sending forwards Andrew Cogliano and Dustin Penner and defenceman Ladislav Smid to Ottawa for Heatley on Wednesday. Heatley declined to waive his no-trade, leaving the Senators on the hook for the signing bonus and the trade dead in the water. "Well, it's different now and I don't know if we will continue or not," Murray told reporters in Ottawa. "It's not the same deal as it was yesterday." Murray said the teams' original deal was no longer an option as a result of Ottawa being forced to pay Heatley's bonus. There are no other deals on the horizon, Murray said. With free agents signing by the hour, the already-signed Heatley represents the best pure scorer available for teams looking for snipers. Martin Havlat signed late Wednesday night with Minnesota, replacing the firepower of Marian Gaborik, who had bolted for the New York Rangers. The free agents left over for Day 2 were largely second-tier players, like ex-Leaf Nik Antropov who signed with the Atlanta Thrashers. Antropov nearly doubled his annual salary with the four-year deal worth $16 million that cashes in on his 28-goal season split between Toronto and the Rangers. In other deals: Los Angeles has a four-year, $13.6 million deal in place with defenceman Rob Scuderi, who is leaving the Stanley Cup-champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Scuderi was part of Pittsburgh's top shutdown defensive pairing along with Hal Gill, who left the Penguins on Wednesday and signed with Montreal. Chicago signed veteran centre John Madden to a one-year deal. "John is a proven winner and one of the premier defensive forwards in the game," Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon said. "... "Adding his experience to our team is an important piece to the puzzle." Mark Recchi inked a one-year deal with Boston for $1 million. Florida signed Jordan Leopold, the defenceman received from Calgary in exchange for Jay Bouwmeester's rights, to a one-year deal. Carolina re-signed forward Chad LaRose to a two-year deal worth $3.4 million. Dallas signed defenceman Karlis Skrastins to a two-year deal worth $2.75 million.
