HOCKEY'S FUTURE PROSPECTS: Marc-Andre Fleury

NAME: Marc-Andre Fleury TEAM/LEAGUE: Cape Breton Screaming Eagles/QMJHL POSITION: Goaltender HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-foot-1/170 lbs. CATCHES: Left BIRTHDATE: 11-28-84 HOMETOWN: Sorel, Que. THE ANALYSIS: There hasn't been a French Canadian goaltender of this caliber since . It's pretty much unanimous that Marc-Andre Fleury will be a franchise goalie. It's extremely difficult to get him off his game and shake him up because he keeps things simple and just concentrates on making saves. This is reflected by his composure off of the ice, which is very loose and outgoing. It's rare that you ever see him without an ear-to-ear smile on his face. He's a butterfly style goaltender you can't count out of making any saves, and they are spectacular when need be. He is definitely the type of goaltender you want on your side during a big game. The only glaring flaw is his play with the puck. He is known to wander out of the crease in order to join the play and get the puck to his teammates, and is subsequently prone to the bad giveaway. However, this is something that can be improved. He will only get better with time and when he gets the opportunity to play against the best competition available. His goals against average may be high but that is a reflection of the poor defensive team he is playing on since his save percentage is impressive at .920. Most goalies would be decimated if they faced the countless amounts of solid scoring chances Fleury sees on a nightly basis. If given the right guidance Fleury may eventually be the difference between winning a Cup and not. THE SKINNY: There is no debate that Fleury has the potential to become a franchise goaltender in the NHL. The only questions are will he wither under the intense scrutiny and pressure and how long will it take for him to develop into a NHL-level goaltender. Expect Fleury to be drafted somewhere in the top three picks at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft due to the difference a great goaltender can make on an entire franchise for a decade.
