PRINCE OF PUCKS: Spector stirs up more rumors

  • Another team has expressed interest in Boston holdout . The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported general manager Don Waddell contacted GM Mike O'Connell regarding their asking price for McLaren, who remains sidelined awaiting a trade. Waddell admitted being interested and hoped to "revisit" talks with O'Connell at a later date. Spector's Take: In other words, Waddell would love to bolster his sagging blueline by adding the physical presence of McLaren, but the ' asking price is far too steep.
  • Mark Everson of the New York Post claims the New Jersey are shopping disgruntled tough-guy center and little-used defenseman . Everson suggests the Calgary , Nashville , Atlanta and Florida may be interested. The are believed to be shopping forwards and , and the Post claims the might be willing to part with forward , whose poor defensive play has landed him in Florida head coach Mike Keenan's doghouse. Spector's Take: As noted in last week's rumor report, the aren't interested in Zyuzin. The talented but underachieving defenseman played for GM Rick Dudley when they were both with the Tampa Bay , and Dudley wasn't impressed with Zyuzin. As for Bure, his lousy defensive game would drive coach Pat Burns nuts. Don't forget, Bure's father also works for the , and the relationship between the two is said to be strained. Everson claims Danton would be Keenan's type of player, but I can't see the , or any of the other clubs noted above, having interest in a problem-child agitator who has yet to make a name for himself in the NHL.
  • Ottawa GM John Muckler insists holdout defenseman won't be traded, but that apparently hasn't stopped teams from making inquiries. The Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch claims the Florida , New York , Toronto and New York are interested in Rachunek. Meanwhile, Larry Brooks of the New York Post suggested the Sens might be interested in a deal that would send and from the for Rachunek and . Spector's Take: Even if the do decide to trade Rachunek, they certainly won't ship him to a hated divisional rival like Toronto. The and might have the young, inexpensive players that would interest the , but not the . Dvorak re-injured his knee, while Kloucek has yet to prove he can play at the NHL level.
