Ryder, Morris play through flu

The flu, which has become a 30th opponent for the Bruins and most other NHL teams this season, continues to make itself an unwelcome visitor in the Boston clubhouse. Winger Michael Ryder and defenseman Derek Morris are the latest Bruins to feel ill, although both played last night. Center David Krejci, still struggling to find his offensive mojo of last season, returned last night after missing two games with a confirmed case of the swine flu. Ryder has been feeling lousy for a couple of days, but is not suffering from the H1N1 virus, the team stressed. He didn't practice on Monday. Morris was checked out yesterday after exhibiting some symptoms, but coach Claude Julien said the club was expecting it to be "just a little bug and nothing more." Penguins struggling After winning 11 of their first 13 games, the Penguins who limped in here last night were considerably cooler, losing their last two games - giving up 10 goals in the process - and three of their last four. They won their first seven road games, tying a club record, before losing at the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings. It equaled the second-longest road streak at the start of a season in NHL history. Despite their problems, the Penguins were tied for the Eastern Conference lead with Washington and tied for third place in the NHL with 24 points (12-5-0). The Penguins have been hit hard by injuries. They have lost defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a broken wrist (he'll be out two more weeks), superstar forward Evgeni Malkin (shoulder strain, possibly returning next week), defenseman Kris Letang (bruised shoulder, out 2-3 weeks), and forward Tyler Kennedy (undisclosed). Forward Max Talbot has missed the entire season so far with a shoulder injury. Those five players accounted for 43 percent of the Penguins' playoff scoring last season on their way to the Stanley Cup. On top of all that, leading scorer Sidney Crosby (9-7-16) came into last night's game without a point in his last four outings. Things got even worse when the Penguins lost defenseman Brooks Orpik in the first period with a lower back injury, forcing them to go with just five back-liners. Bear Facts Milan Lucic (broken finger) skated in full battle array for about 40 minutes before Monday's practice, but his return is far from imminent. Center Marc Savard (broken foot) is even further away, although both are improving, Julien said. ... The Bruins were looking for their first winning streak of the season. They haven't won consecutive games yet. ... Forward Brad Marchand, who has exhibited a tendency to take some bad penalties lately, was a healthy scratch last night along with defenseman Johnny Boychuk. ... Boston ranks seventh in the NHL in fewest goals against (2.44), but is just 26th in goals per game (2.25). The B's rank fourth in hits (414) and fourth in faceoffs (51.9 percent), and have the second-fewest giveaways (93) in the NHL.
