SO long, winning streak: Devils get better of B's

Devils 2, Bruins 1 Tuukka Rask brought his successful road show home to a capacity crowd of 17,565 yesterday at TD Garden. But while the Bruins backup goalie once again performed well, making 36 saves, the New Jersey Devils came away with a 2-1 shootout win. Rask couldn't stave off Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner in the shootout. Blake Wheeler scored the Bruins' lone shootout tally against goalie Martin Brodeur (32 saves). ``We knew what to expect against New Jersey; they play a defensive game and they don't give you much chances,'' said Rask, who'd won all four games on the B's recent road trip. ``We've had some pretty tough games, lots of overtimes and shootouts, so it gets you mentally tough.'' Rask needed a combination of skill and luck during a brutal stretch in the first period. The Devils surge began when Vladimir Sobotka, who was filling in for left winger Milan Lucic (high ankle sprain) on the third line, was tagged with an interference call at 13:11. Center Travis Zajac swatted a feed from the backboards into the exposed half of the crease just as the Bruins cage became unhinged at 14:15. After that goal was disallowed, Zajac fanned on a similar shot from the same location that Rask was out of position to prevent. Rask came up big just as Sobotka's penalty ended. Former Bruins winger Brian Rolston split the defense and dashed between the circles. Rask stayed with the play and made a blocker save on Rolston's high bid for the near post. ``I thought their best chance was that breakaway, but they had some good shots,'' said Rask. The Devils went up 1-0 at 9:45 of the second period on an expertly orchestrated play in the Bruins end. Left winger Dean McAmmond won the draw in the right circle and worked the puck over to defenseman Bryce Salvador at the left point. Salvador fired a slapper through a screen that Rask stopped. Right winger Matt Halischuk's follow-up shot rebounded off Rask and onto Parise's stick, and Parise powered home his 14th goal of the season to extend his points streak to nine games. ``I saved it two times before it got to (Parise),'' said Rask. ``He got to it first and he whacked at it and drove my pad into the net. It takes a lot of power to jam your leg back into the net, and there's not much you can do.'' The Bruins tied the game 12 seconds into the third period. Marc Savard won the opening faceoff and later gained control of the puck in the Devils end. Savard fed Byron Bitz, who backhanded the puck to Wheeler at the bottom of the left circle. Wheeler one-timed a wrist shot past Brodeur for his seventh goal of the campaign. ``Goals come at a premium against these guys, and to get one right away in the third period made our confidence go up a notch there,'' said Wheeler. ``It was kind of a character test to see if we could come back on these guys.'' The Bruins had an excellent opportunity to win the game in the final seconds of regulation. Michael Ryder led a rush up the left boards and made a sweet feed to Savard in the slot.
