The Minnesota Wild announced Sunday night that Coyle suffered a sprained knee in Saturday night's 4-3 loss in overtime to the Anaheim Ducks and is expected to miss three to four weeks. Forward Jason Zucker was recalled from the Iowa Wild to fill Coyle's spot in the lineup.
Following Saturday night's game, Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said Coyle wasn't "gravely" injured but wasn't expected to play on Tuesday, but the Wild will be missing their second-line center for a while. Coyle, in his second year, had won the second-line center job in training camp.
Zucker, 21, was one of the final cuts of training camp, being sent to Iowa of the American Hockey League with center Mikael Granlund staying. It's possible Zucker and Granlund could be on the same line now. Granlund has played wing the past two games, but could move back to his natural center spot with Coyle out.
Zucker had four goals and one assists in 20 regular season games with Minnesota last season and had a goal and assists while playing in all five playoff games. The Wild only had 12 forwards on the roster, with Mike Rupp on injured reserve.
