Former Minnesota Gophers basketball player Joe Coleman has picked his landing spot after asking for his release on May 15, with ESPN reporting that Saint Mary's is his destination.
"It came down to the fact that coach (Randy) Bennett has been able to develop guards and also that they have playing time available," Coleman told ESPN.com. "When coach (Tubby) Smith left, I decided I wanted to go somewhere that I could expand my game."
As a sophomore last year, the 6-foot-4 Coleman averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. The former Hopkins High School star was named Minnesota Mr. Basketball in 2011 and the AP Minnesota Player of the Year, as well as a First Team All-State selection. Scout.com ranked him as a three-star recruit.
Coleman will have sit out this season and will have two years of eligibility for Saint Mary's. ESPN reported that he also visited Creighton, and drew interest from Gonzaga, Florida State and Oregon.
