The bus, which was taking players from Fort Myers, Fla., to Elizabethton, Tenn., collided with a car driving the wrong way on Interstate 295 in Jacksonville. Both vehicles swerved to avoid the collision, Sgt. Dylan Bryan of the Florida Highway Patrol said in the report, but the bus hit the car head-on. The driver of the car, a male described as in his 20s, was killed.
"Police were on the scene almost immediately as they had received a call of a car going the wrong way on the highway and were headed that way," said Dustin Morse, the Twins' director of baseball communications.
Twins president Dave St. Peter tweeted Tuesday morning: "Tragic accident involving @EtownTwins bus. Thankful all members of @Twins family are safe. Thoughts and prayers for driver of other vehicle. . . . The bus driver saw the car coming and tried to pull over to the side of the road but was still hit by the car."
Morse said the bus company brought another bus to the site, and the team is now back on the road.
The Elizabethton Twins play in the Appalachian League and were heading north from Florida to Tennessee to prepare for their season, which begins Thursday.
