Wolves Wednesday: Shved, Pekovic still out
JAN 23, 2013 1:28p ET
MINNEAPOLIS – Guard Alexey Shved and center Nikola Pekovic will be out for Wednesday's game against Brooklyn at the Target Center. Both were injured in the second half of last Thursday's game against the Clippers, Shved with a sprained left ankle and Pekovic with a right quad contusion. That gives the Timberwolves 10 healthy players against the Nets.
The day after Pekovic's injury, the team announced that he'd miss 7-10 days, and if that still holds, that would place his return as early as Friday in Washington or Saturday in Charlotte. Shved's status has been day-to-day since the ankle injury, and he did a light workout Tuesday.
Forbes NBA team valuations: A story on Forbes.com posted Thursday revealed that owners have seen massive gains since 2011's NBA lockout. The average NBA team in 2013 is valued at $509 million, a 30 percent increase over last season.
The Knicks are currently the league's most valuable team, a spot that was last year held by the Lakers. (Kobe and company are still the second-most valuable team, at $1 billion.) New York's team is currently valued at $1.1 billion, up 41 percent on the year due mainly to the renovations to Madison Square Garden.
According to the story, the Timberwolves are valued at $364 million, 26th in the league and well below the league average. Their valuation is greater than just the Hornets, Hawks, Bobcats and Bucks.
Barea's flopping: Guard J.J. Barea was fined $5,000 for his second flop of the season, which occurred against his former team, the Mavericks, in Dallas on Jan. 14. He said that he plans to meet with president of basketball operations David Kahn to discuss whether anything can be done about the fine, and he admitted that he has slightly altered his style of play in light of the flopping fines, which were instituted at the beginning of the 2012-13 season.
Barea was the first NBA player to receive a warning for flopping (the first flop results in only that, no fine) on Nov. 2, the Timberwolves' opening night, against the Kings.
