Germany's Jonas Reckermann, left, and Julius Brink became the first Europeans to win an Olympic beach volleyball title.

The Germans celebrate their 23-21, 16-21, 16-14 victory when Brazil's spike on the last point was ruled out. Brazil's Emanuel and Alison appealed without success for referee Rui Carvalho to come down and check the ball mark himself. But the official merely signaled the end of the match, and the German celebration continued. Replays appeared to show that the call was correct.

Brazil's Emanuel came up short in an attempt to win a second gold medal. He won gold in Athens and a bronze in Beijing, both times with Ricardo as his partner.
