There’s just nothing like that perfect moment — the one when you beat the entire world and take the gold medal. Several American athletes, including swimmer Matt Grevers, have experienced that true thrill of victory in the London Olympics already. Who is bringing home a gold medal for the US?

Jennifer Suhr catapults herself to gold in the women's pole vault in London. Suhr, who won silver at the 2008 Beijing Games, cleared 15 feet, 7 inches (4.75 meters) on her second attempt Monday to win her first gold medal.

In the most lopsided women's singles final in Olympic history, Serena Williams celebrates after defeating Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 to win her first gold in singles. Williams only lost 17 games (in six matches) on her way to the title. She also joins Steffi Graf as the only women to win all four majors and Olympic gold.

At just 15, Katie Ledecky took the pool by storm Friday in winning gold in the 800-meter freestyle. Ledecky, the youngest member of the US team, nearly broke the world record while dominating from start to finish.

Another day, another gold for star Michael Phelps, who claimed his third gold of the London Games — and record 21st medal of his Olympic career — in the 100-meter butterfly on Friday.

Phelps also has won gold medals in the 200 IM and with the US team in the 4x200 freestyle at these games.

Tyler Clary shocked the field, and teammate Ryan Lochte, in taking the gold in the 200-meter backstroke. Clary trained with Michael Phelps at the University of Michigan and questioned his training habits in the days leading up to the games.

Rebecca Soni swam to take gold in a world-record time in the women's 200-meter breaststroke final on Thursday. Soni, in her second Olympics, first set a world record in the preliminaries, then topped it in the final.

The US women's eight team of Erin Cafaro, Susan Francia, Esther Lofgren, Taylor Ritzel, Meghan Musnicki, Eleanor Logan, Caroline Lind, Caryn Davies and Mary Whipple took the gold medal in the women's eight Wednesday, living up to their reputation as a team to watch.

Adrian added his name to the Americans to top the podium with his 100-meter freestyle win on Aug. 1. Adrian out-lunged James “The Missile” Magnussen by one-hundredth of a second — the slimmest margin possible.

Armstrong turned in a gutsy ride just a few months after suffering a broken collarbone to take her second consecutive gold medal in the women's individual time trial cycling event on Aug. 1. Armstrong joins legend Greg LeMond as the only Americans to win three world championship medals.

Lochte was fast out of the gate in the Olympics, taking the gold medal in the men’s 400-meter IM on July 28. He also won gold with the US team in the 4x200 freestyle relay. Lochte is certainly not new to being on top of the field. He was a seven-time NCAA champion, and 24-time All-American while competing for the University of Florida.

Grevers won the gold in the 100-meter backstroke, the fourth Olympic medal of his career after taking three in Beijing in 2008. He is in London with the support of his fiance, Annie Chandler, who also attempted to make the Olympic team.

Vollmer raced to gold in the women’s 100-meter butterfly on July 29 for her second Olympic medal after also winning gold as part of a relay team in the 2004 Games. She then added a third gold to her resume on Aug. 1 as part of the US 4x200 freestyle relay team. A native of Texas, Vollmer truly is a veteran of top-notch swim competition. Her first US Olympic trials appearance came as a 12-year-old in 2000.

Hancock won the men’s skeet shooting gold, his second consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event. The 23-year-old is an Army sergeant — and is an old hand at winning top honors. He won his first world title when he was just 16.

Franklin charmed fans and media with her open personality and stunning talent. The 17-year-old won the gold in the 100-meter backstroke, then added two more golds in the 200 backstroke and with the US team in the 4x200 freestyle relay. She is making history as the first American woman to compete in seven Olympic events.

Rhode turned in a stellar performance to take the gold in women’s skeet shooting. She not only took the top medal, but she also etched her place in the history books. Rhode is the first American to win medals in five consecutive Olympic Games — with this being her third Olympic gold.

Schmitt won the women's 200-meter freestyle by setting a new Olympic record of 1 minute, 53.61 seconds. She also won gold with the US team in the 4x200 freestyle relay.

The US women’s team entered the Olympics as the favorites and did nothing to endanger their top billing. They were stellar throughout the competition, taking the gold medal handily. It was the first gold for American women in the team competition since 1996.

This was a special relay swim for Michael Phelps, Conor Dwyer, Ryan Lochte and Ricky Berens. There was no dramatic finish to rival memories of the 2008 men’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay, but it was record-breaking for Phelps. The US men won gold by more than three seconds, a victory that helped Phelps become the most decorated Olympian of all time.
